Excerpt: They turn the corner and there it is, a spaceship. At least, Joan can't think of what else it could be. It is not chrome and gleaming like the ones in the science fiction movies. It is red-black and hunched over like a gigantic spider and she stops running. Her eyes are trying to tell her that the scale can't be right, that the thing can't tower like that, but it must be.
"Are you coming?" Martha says. She's paused to catch her breath and now she's offering Joan her own hand.
