Excerpt: Eliot never quits thinking, not until his vision goes red around the edges and his body moves and he lets his fists do the work.
Anyone can hit somebody, and Eliot has seen a lot of people who are good at that -- just that. They don't think for themselves, and they can't handle it when the plan goes bad, and it always does, eventually.
Eliot never quits thinking, not until his vision goes red around the edges and his body moves and he lets his fists do the work. It would have been easier for him, maybe, if he could turn off his brain at will, or killed it with pills or alcohol, but he keeps surviving, his body living for him while his soul suffers.
Eliot reads poetry in Korea and does crosswords in Afghanistan and cooks in Jordan and he keeps hitting people, because it's what he's good at -- because he's the best.
