With Korra and Asami on vacation, Bolin had a limited pool of people to talk to about his new problem. He felt weird telling his brother about his love life, but he was still a better choice than his ex-girlfriend or the police chief.

Man, he needed to make some more friends. The ones he had were great, but not really helpful when it came to romantic problems.

He tried to be casual about, so of course Mako got suspicious right away.

"Why are you asking me what love feels like?" Mako said, scowling and punching the punching bag he'd mounted in their tiny apartment. It wasn't a great start. Bolin probably should have remembered that Mako's last girlfriend had just run off for a vacation with her new girlfriend and been a little more sensitive. See, this was why he definitely needed more people to get advice from. He wondered how much Meelo would charge for the service.

"Uh, I guess, uh. I want to make sure that I know what I'm talking about, because this is really weird...?" Bolin's voice trailed off in a much higher register than he liked.

Mako sighed, took off a glove, and took a drink of water. "What's weird about it? Opal was a nice girl, it's perfectly normal to need some time to get over her."

Bolin kind of wished that his brother was psychic so that he didn't have to explain this out loud, but then again, terrible idea, scratch that, he did not want Mako to know all of his recent fantasies.

"It's not Opal. It's a new girl. A new... person," Bolin corrected. His cheeks were bright red now, he could feel the heat in them.

"Okay," Mako said, putting his glove back on and re-focusing on his workout. "I didn't even know you were dating anyone. When did you have time to meet a... person? Which, by the way, it's fine, date anyone who makes you happy. No matter what gender they are."

Bolin hadn't paused to worry about his brother's reaction to the fact that he was interested in a man, because he knew Mako would love him no matter what, but it was good to know that Mako had apparently considered this before and was fine with it. He let out a breath he hadn't known he was holding.

"It's Varrick," he said. "I don't know why, but I just can't quit thinking about him!"

And he had in fact had a lengthy and embarrassing contest with Zhu Li to get Varrick's attention earlier this week, which had left him exhausted. He needed to just tell Varrick and get it off his chest. Then he could have other things to think about instead of staring at Varrick's great moustache. And legs. And everything.

Mako blinked. "Varrick?" he repeated. "Varrick? Seriously?"

Bolin bit his lip. "Yes?" he said.

Mako shook his head, shrugged, and started doing reps with the bag. "I thought he and Zhu Li had a thing."

"I thought so too, but Varrick told me that she was just his assistant!" Bolin said, remembering his great relief at the time.

Mako mumbled something that Bolin didn't catch, but before he could ask, his brother continued, "I guess it's kind of weird, but I mean, if it's what you really want, why don't you just ask him how he feels about you?"

"It sounds easy when you say it," Bolin answered. He didn't know what he expected from Mako. Mako had a very direct personality. Bolin was the brother with all the showmanship.

"Yeah, well..." Mako said, wiping sweat from his forehead. "It could actually be that easy."

"Or..." Bolin said, sitting upright, eyes widening. "Or, Pabu and I could do a little show! Do you think he'd like that?"

"Who, Pabu?" Mako said, forehead wrinkling, but Bolin had stopped paying attention; in his head, he was casting a small production that ended with flowers and a dinner proposal. Zhu Li could tell him when Varrick was free, and Pabu could reuse some of his tricks from their begging show. It would be super impressive, and Varrick would definitely want to go out with him.

"Thanks, bro!" Bolin said, getting up and hurrying towards the door. He slammed it behind himself in his hurry, and for once, Mako didn't shout after him for doing it.

"Takes all kinds," he mumbled to himself, and then started another set of reps. But he might have been smiling a little.
