[Avatar: The Last Airbender] as simple and as difficult as that (Zuko/Sokka)
Title: as simple and as difficult as that
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Length: 582 words
Prompt: fic_promptly: Avatar: TLA, alwaysagirl!Zuko/Sokka, "You want me to marry you?!"
Pairing: Zuko/Sokka
Other: AU per the prompt.
Excerpt: Sokka looked taken aback. He pulled at the neck of his shirt. "That's what that means," he said, pointing at the necklace. "I mean, I know I'm not great with carving or anything, but that's totally what that means. The necklace. It's a betrothal one, like the one Katara wears? You've seen it?"
"You want me to marry you?"
Sokka looked taken aback. He pulled at the neck of his shirt. "That's what that means," he said, pointing at the necklace. "I mean, I know I'm not great with carving or anything, but that's totally what that means. The necklace. It's a betrothal one, like the one Katara wears? You've seen it?"
His voice kept rising until it nearly broke, and that's when Zuko realized that Sokka thought she was turning him down.
"Yeah, I've seen it, I just -- you want me to marry you?" Her hand crept up to the damaged side of her face. When she felt the rough skin, she made herself put her fingers down. Sokka never looked at her face like it was a deal-breaker. He was always pushing her hair out of her face, saying that she looked pretty underneath.
Sokka's confusion became bewilderment. "Who else?" he said. "I thought you felt the same way!"
"I do!" Zuko blurted out, and at least this was the right thing to say, because Sokka relaxed a little. She closed her hand around the necklace. "I do love you," she repeated for good measure, because it made a broad smile break across his face. "I didn't want... are you sure you're up for this? All of this?"
She gestured broadly, finding no easier way to convey the difficulties of her life. She was the Fire Lady now, but there was still unrest across the kingdom, tensions with the Earth Kingdom colonies, people who wanted the restoration of the monarchy, even though she was the rightful heir. Things would be no easier with a Southern Water Tribe prince as her consort. But it would be even harder for Sokka, she thought, far away from his friends and family, stuck in a Fire Nation where most citizens would think of him as a backwards barbarian, influencing their young queen.
"Am I up for it?" Sokka asked rhetorically. "I can't wait! Seriously." His gaze softened. "I'd like to think I'd be a good advisor. It's kind of my thing."
He was good at giving advice. He spent long stretches of time traveling around with Aang, trying to help unite the four nations. He'd been gone, in fact, for almost two months, before arriving back at the palace a few days ago. He must have carved the necklace while on the road. It was a little homely, but she loved it. She pressed her fingertips into the grooves, which he had carefully sanded down to softness.
"Can you put it on me?" she asked, handing it to him, and his fingers were shaking a bit as he fastened it around her neck. It fit perfectly. Sokka wrapped his arms around her from behind, enfolding her in his comfortable, slightly fishy smell. He kissed the top of her head.
"We are going to have the best wedding ever," Sokka said. Zuko had never asked him about Southern Water Tribe wedding traditions before, except for the necklace of course, and wondered what that involved. She knew what it would involve on her end -- a lot of pomp and ceremony. Sokka would love it.
"We will," she said, turning her head so she could kiss him, and for the rest of the night, her worries went away. She didn't think about politics or the state of the treasury, or the fact that Sokka couldn't ask her family's consent to her union. She was simply happy.
