[Glee] halcyon (Mercedes/Quinn)
Title: halcyon
Fandom: Glee
Length: 694 words
Prompt: Let's Make Out ficathon: glee, mercedes/quinn, girls night in
Pairing: Mercedes/Quinn
Other: Set in S1.
Excerpt: "Do that again," Mercedes says, and they shift around on the couch so that they're sitting next to each other, leaning in. This time Mercedes kisses back, and Quinn's hand on her skin makes her shiver. They kiss until they have to pause to breathe, and Quinn laces her fingers with Mercedes's.
From the way that Quinn is slumped into the couch, her belly looks enormous, perfectly round with the slightest bump of her bellybutton in the middle. There are a lot of things that people say -- that she swallowed a beach ball, that she's growing a watermelon -- but not enough people are saying that she's beautiful. Mercedes tries to say it a lot. Quinn is tired and achy and her feet hurt all the time. It's weird to see her big like this, after all of the sideways glances Mercedes used to make at her when she passed in the hallway. Mercedes couldn't tell you why Quinn always grabbed her attention, then. At least, she wanted to think that it wasn't simply because Quinn was popular and skinny, everything Mercedes was not. But they have both become people they never imagined they'd be.
They went shopping today and Mercedes talked Quinn into buying a beautiful dress with broad white and grey stripes. She tried it on and it made the bump all the more obvious, which she didn't like. But Mercedes saw the way the color brought out the grey in Quinn's blue eyes and the way her skin glowed against the cream. Her tiny arms deserved to be bared to the sunshine, and Mercedes told Quinn so. Quinn gave in. She needed something nice to wear, anyway, now that most of her pants were too small and Mercedes's mom couldn't let them out any further.
The shopping exhausted them both so they decided on movie night tonight. They're watching Mean Girls and mouthing along to the really good parts. There aren't really any black people in this movie, which always makes Mercedes feel a little weird, but she can't resist a Lindsay Lohan classic. That girl needs prayer.
She's thinking about that and rubbing Quinn's feet when Quinn shifts uncomfortably and Mercedes looks up. Quinn's face is white in the light from the television, and she says, "Bathroom." She maneuvers awkwardly up from the sinking couch and goes down the hall. Mercedes doesn't pause the movie since they've both seen it a dozen times. She watches Lindsay write in the sparkly book and wonders if popular girls ever honestly did something like that. Probably not. Words are easier to hide.
Quinn comes back from the bathroom but doesn't sit down. She leans down so that her face is level with Mercedes, and looks at Mercedes with that expression that makes Mercedes want to promise to make everything better. She can't fix teenage pregnancy, but she can be there for it, at least, which is more than Quinn's parents bothered to do.
Quinn is crying and Mercedes shifts on the couch to get up and hug her, but Quinn shakes her head.
"Mercedes, you've been so so nice to me," she says. "You've been so nice and I can't stop thinking... I can't..."
"Thinking what?" Mercedes asks, and when Quinn leans forward, she rests a hand lightly on the side of Mercedes's face, and she kisses her. It is an awkward angle, with Quinn leaning forward past her stomach, Mercedes leaning up from the couch, but Mercedes shuts her eyes and lets Quinn kiss her. There's a tingling in her chest that she doesn't have a name for, but she wants to name it. Quinn has made it real, voiced the dream within her.
She doesn't kiss back, slow to react to the surprise, and Quinn pulls away, so fast that she nearly overbalances. Mercedes reaches out and catches her wrist to pull her back, and she almost falls into Mercedes's lap, the baby between them, Quinn's eyes wide and frightened.
"Do that again," Mercedes says, and they shift around on the couch so that they're sitting next to each other, leaning in. This time Mercedes kisses back, and Quinn's hand on her skin makes her shiver. They kiss until they have to pause to breathe, and Quinn laces her fingers with Mercedes's.
"You're the only one who saw me," Quinn says, "and didn't run away."
Mercedes squeezes her hand and starts to sing, soft and low, just for them.
