[Star Trek: The Next Generation] so you dare tell me who to be (Geordi/Data)
Title: so you dare tell me who to be
Fandom: Star Trek: The Next Generation
Length: 540 words
Prompt: fic_promptly: Star Trek: TNG, Geordi La Forge/Data, FAQ
Pairing: Geordi/Data
Other: n/a
Excerpt: "I am not sure what love feels like, but I would notice every day if Geordi was gone or no longer wanted to speak with me. I would feel his absence. He smiles when he sees me. I cannot speak for him, of course, but he has verbally expressed fondness for me."
After a while, they get used to the questions. They still annoy Geordi sometimes, but Data is the most patient person Geordi knows, so he lets Data field them.
1. What's it like, dating an android?
"Geordi says it is like dating any person, except that people ask him a lot of questions about it."
2. How can you date if he has no emotions?
"That does not preclude a relationship. I have been in a successful relationship before, although it ultimately ended. Relationships are about more than emotions or attraction. They are about wanting to be with someone intimately, and that is what we share."
3. Are you in love?
"I am not sure what love feels like, but I would notice every day if Geordi was gone or no longer wanted to speak with me. I would feel his absence. He smiles when he sees me. I cannot speak for him, of course, but he has verbally expressed fondness for me."
4. What do you do together?
"We do a large variety of activities. Some examples include visiting Ten Forward, playing tri-dimensional chess, and using the holodeck programs. There are many leisure activities available aboard ship. I am sure you have availed yourself of them at one point or another. Let me recommend the small ensemble concerts. The players are all very skilled."
5. How did this happen?
"Ever since I came aboard ship, Geordi has been my closest friend. He has never made me feel like a lesser being. It seemed like a natural evolution of our close relationship when we decided to begin dating. The transition has not always been easy, but we talk about our difficulties and work them out, like any couple. I do not understand why you are questioning it. It seems very obvious."
This is the usually the point where Geordi takes Data's hand and pulls him away from the conversation, shaking his head. A gawking stranger could happily ask questions all night, getting ruder and ruder. He's heard enough.
"How do you feel about staying in tonight, Data?" he asks. "I'm not feeling this party."
"What does it feel like?" Data asks.
Geordi smiles. "Feels like there are a lot of nosy people out there tonight. I'm thinking dinner and a sci-fi movie. Sound good?"
"I think it is my turn to pick the movie," Data reminds him, with the gentlest of reprimands, but Geordi doesn't mind at all. He swings their hands together, Data's palm cool against his, sturdy and right. Why would anyone question them?
"You're right," he says, "but no more instructional videos, okay? I always fall asleep in the middle."
Data enjoys nonfiction, and so does Geordi, but only to a point.
"I do not mind it when you sleep on my shoulder," Data says. "To the contrary. It is something people in relationships do commonly, from what I understand."
"Generally not because they're bored out of their minds," Geordi mumbles, but he won't veto Data's choice, no matter how dull. They are getting good at compromises.
"Just wake me up if I snore," he says, and Data nods, and no one asks any more questions.
