[Avatar: The Last Airbender] you say sorry just for show (Sokka/Zuko)
Title: you say sorry just for show
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender
Length: 297 words
Prompt: fic_promptly: Avatar: The Last Airbender, Sokka/Zuko + Katara + Azula, awkward family dinner
Pairing: Sokka/Zuko
Other: n/a
Excerpt: Family dinner, right. Sure. The future Firelord was dating her annoying brother, and the idea guy thought that a family dinner would make everyone okay with this and happy.
"This is stupid," Azula pronounced.
Zuko coughed.
"Stupid? No, this is fine, this is great," Sokka said, his voice rising desperately. Katara felt a headache coming on. This was definitely not one of Sokka's better ideas.
Family dinner, right. Sure. The future Firelord was dating her annoying brother, and the idea guy thought that a family dinner would make everyone okay with this and happy.
So far as she was concerned, the two of them deserved each other, but she knew Azula would never agree. She was lucid most of the time now, but that didn't make this any better.
"It was very nice of you to invite us to dinner," Katara said to Zuko.
"Yes, Zuzu never eats with me except on very special occasions," Azula said. "He doesn't like me very much."
"Azula, you did try to kill me. A few times," Zuko said. "And all of my friends. And my boyfriend."
"I should have tried harder," Azula grumbled.
"Well, I think we can chalk this up to a complete failure," Sokka announced, getting up from the table and wiping his hands off on his pants.
Zuko grabbed his hand and pulled him back down into his seat. He didn't let go. They were holding hands under the table. Katara had to admit, it was kind of cute. When Sokka first told Katara about his changing relationship with Zuko, Katara hadn't been sure what to think. It complicated the politics that were already difficult. But they seemed happy. That mattered more.
"Katara, would you pass the rice?" Zuko asked. She did. Azula sighed loudly.
"I want some of the smoked sea slugs," Azula said. Katara pushed the plate closer to her. After a moment's hesitation, Azula took it.
It was a start. Sokka squeezed Zuko's hand.
