"It's a cry for help," Lin says, and Suyin scowls at her.

"It is not," she says. "I just wanted a tattoo, okay? No big deal. Lots of people have them."

"Lots of people who aren't good people," Lin says, folding her arms. The intimidating stare works on perps and on civilians alike, so why hasn't it ever worked on her little sister? Suyin hasn't listened to her, really listened, since she got too old to follow behind with her little baby hand on the hem of Suyin's shirt. Lin has never ever thought she would miss those days.

Suyin rolls her eyes. "Uh, not all of them. Or did you forget about your boyfriend?"

"Seriously?" Lins says. "You're going to try that one? What part of 'ceremonial Airbender Mastery tattoos' sounds like 'little flower on my ankle that I will regret someday'?"

"Who says I'll regret it? The tattoo artist said I was old enough and I wanted to do it, so I did. It's not your body or your business," Suyin says. She scratches the back of her ankle with the other foot, lifting the tattoo into more prominence. It isn't reddened or bright. Lin isn't sure how long Suyin has had it, but she suspects that it has been a while. She never would have known if Suyin hadn't been coming out of the bath when Lin was going in, and she happened to glance down. And now they are arguing in the hallway. Suyin's hair is dripping on the floor, and Lin's legs are mud-splattered from a day of hard work.

"Of course it's my business, I'm your sister," Lin says. "I'm going to tell Mom."

Suyin laughs. "Good luck with that," she says, and this time she pushes past Lin into her bedroom, slamming the door behind her.

Lin sighs. She looks down at her own bare feet and wiggles her pale toes. Her body is not unmarked -- she has already gotten her share of scars. But she did not choose any of them. She cannot imagine choosing them.

Su's door stays closed. Lin goes into the bathroom and turns the water on.
