[Frozen/Brave] how you get the girl (Elsa/Merida)

Title: how you get the girl
Fandom: Frozen/Brave
Length: 521 words
Prompt: fic_promptly: Frozen/Brave, Elsa/Merida, making it work
Pairing: Elsa/Merida
Other: Set post-canon for both movies.

Excerpt: "You can't just sit alone in this room all day," Merida said, a note of frustration in her voice. "Come on, no more boring dinners or talking about fabrics. I do not care how the gown drapes. Let's do something else."

"What," and Elsa coughed her mouth suddenly dry, "what do you want to do?"

It was a strange match to say the least. Merida bonded with Anna right away and they spent hours exploring the castle together. They sneaked into the stables and out onto the roof and soon had three in-jokes that Elsa didn't understand at all.

She felt cold, looking at Merida. At least at first. The other woman was vibrant, her accent difficult to understand. She offered her opinion on any subjects and chafed at the idea of queenly things, although she wasn't bad at the embroidery. She was nothing like Elsa had expected.

She was a stranger. The wedding crept closer and closer and Elsa withdrew into her chambers, worrying. This had looked so good on paper: the bonding of their kingdoms, Merida getting a chance to build a new life in a new place, and Elsa marrying, solidifying her reign. They could adopt children later. They would get to know each other. Their parents' marriages had been arranged and had worked out fine.

Merida's family were scheduled to arrive within the week. Elsa had heard Merida describe them with a sort of frustrated affection that Elsa identified with. Her brothers were terrors, apparently, but there was genuine love there. Of course, this was a joining of kingdoms, and it wasn't just going to involve Merida's parents. There would be even more guests than attended her coronation.

At least this time, nothing could go that wrong, Elsa consoled herself, but she wasn't sure. What if she just turned around at the door and ran? She could go somewhere further than the ice castle, and let Anna and Merida rule the kingdom.

She'd never do that, but it didn't stop her from being startled when there was a knock at her door, as if someone had heard her guilty thoughts.

"Queen Elsa?"

The voice was Merida's. Elsa hesitated, and then said, "Come in."

The door opened and Merida poked her head in. Her mess of curls was wild again, framing her round face, and Elsa was struck again by how pretty she was, how her confidence made her tall and unhesitating.

"I thought maybe you'd like to come outside, actually," Merida said.

Elsa couldn't think why; the wedding preparations were done and she was sure that the ships hadn't begun arriving yet.

"You can't just sit alone in this room all day," Merida said, a note of frustration in her voice. "Come on, no more boring dinners or talking about fabrics. I do not care how the gown drapes. Let's do something else."

"What," and Elsa coughed her mouth suddenly dry, "what do you want to do?"

Merida shrugged and offered her hand to Elsa. "Let's see what's out there."

Elsa wasn't wearing her gloves today; she wore them less and less often. Nowadays they were more of a security blanket than a necessity. She was never going to freeze anything on accident again. She took Merida's hand.

"Would you like to go skating?" she found herself asking; the ballroom would still be empty at this early juncture, although she knew that some of the decorations had already been hung.

Merida grinned.
