[Legend of Korra] after that we need some other excuse (Zuko/Toph)
Title: after that we need some other excuse
Fandom: Legend of Korra

Prompt: Old Zuko and Toph for Katie's birthday.
Pairing: Zuko/Toph
Other: Set in some nebulous Korra AU, mid season 4.
Excerpt: "Who has invaded the territory of the MELON LORD?" Toph bellows, moments after he stepped onto a fairly sturdy branch.
"It's just me, Toph," Zuko says.
Zuko knows that Toph knows he's here, that as soon as his feet touched the ground -- as soon as Druk's feet did, more accurately -- she knew who had come to visit her. That doesn't stop her from her usual shtick, however. Sometimes he thinks she exaggerates it for his benefit.
"Who has invaded the territory of the MELON LORD?" Toph bellows, moments after he stepped onto a fairly sturdy branch.
"It's just me, Toph," Zuko says.
"The MELON LORD takes no visitors!" Toph says, and then she appears in the doorway of her cave. If she is a little more hunched and white-haired than she was the last time he visited, well, so is he. He smiles.
"I let one Avatar visit and suddenly everyone knows I'm here," she says, but she waves him inside, bustling around to make tea. He sits down at her table and they share a comfortable silence as the tea seeps and she pours.
She inhales the steam deeply and says, "I guess you've come to tell me I should help out."
Zuko takes a sip, wrapping his hands around the warm cup. He shakes his head. "You'll do whatever you think is right to do," he says. "After all these years, don't I know better than to argue with you?"
Toph sighs. She sighs again and scratches the inside of her ear with her pinky.
"Look," she says, "the kids can handle it. Why did we have kids otherwise?"
"I could think of a number of different reasons," Zuko says, and Toph laughs.
"You might have a sense of humor one of these days," she announces. "Come on, we have time for a quickie before we need to go."
She gets up, leaving her cup behind, and Zuko follows her sure feet into another adventure.
