[Wreck-It Ralph] happiness condensed (Ralph gen)

Title: happiness condensed
Fandom: Wreck-It Ralph
Length: 570 words
Prompt: comment_fic: Wreck-It Ralph, any, moving into another game after his/hers game was unplugged
Pairing: Ralph gen
Other: n/a

Excerpt: "No, no," he says, "everyone's great. Sticky but great." He sighs. Vanellope buffs her fingernails with a hard piece of taffy, humming to herself.

Ralph isn't sure if he'll ever really get used to Sugar Rush.

It was incredibly generous of Vanellope to take him and the others in when their game was finally unplugged, of course. He's definitely grateful. The apartment residents have fit right into the crowd scenes and Ralph likes to watch the races too, but he feels like he used to feel before his first trip here -- like he doesn't fit in anywhere.

Felix took the plunge and moved in with Calhoun when he finally accepted that he really couldn't fix their game. The hammer can't repair child disinterest or wiring problems. Now he's a house-husband. Ralph visits sometimes. The place is very clean, and the two of them seem happy. Felix has even been hinting about some new code appearing sometime soon. Ralph is happy for him.

Ralph is too big to sit comfortably in the bleachers. He's been working in the kart factory, but it's mostly self-sufficient. He just has to clean up the mess and refill the candy jars. Wrecking stuff wasn't any more intellectually satisfying, but this job is definitely more sticky.

Ralph goes to visit Vanellope in her castle. The arcade isn't open so she considers herself off-duty, and she's discarded the poofy pink dress in favor of her old hoodie and skirt. She's practicing hand-to-hand combat moves with her rivals. Calhoun has been giving lessons in case they ever need to defend themselves again. Taffyta has a black eye. Vanellope is grinning.

When Ralph knocks gently at the door Vanellope calls a break and they go into her sitting room. Vanellope flops down on the couch, cheeks bright with her exercise.

"How's it hanging, Ralph?" she asks. "Nobody's being a jerk, right?"

Ralph appreciates her asking. All of Sugar Rush is now very much aware of the Princess's views on bullying.

"No, no," he says, "everyone's great. Sticky but great." He sighs. Vanellope buffs her fingernails with a hard piece of taffy, humming to herself.

"So what's the deal, then? You're sighing like somebody kicked your puppy. Do you miss wrecking stuff? I know that not fitting in sucks. Maybe we could use you on the track construction crew. What do you say?"

Ralph reaches over and ruffles her hair. "Nah, it's okay, kid. I've got to find my own place here. I never thought I'd miss a garbage dump, you know?"

"We need a yeti!" Vanellope says, bouncing up in her seat. "That's totally what we need -- a yeti to run out on the track and try to eat the karts on top of Mentos Mountain! I always felt like that track was missing something."

Ralph pictures himself covered in white cotton candy and the idea makes him smile, but he shakes his head.

"Are you sure? That would be so great!" Vanellope says, and he can't tell that girl no about anything.

"I'll think about it," he says, and she bounds up from the couch and puts her tiny hand in his enormous one. He allows her to pull him out of the room.

Well, he guesses that he'll at least have something new to tell the guys at Bad-Anon this week.

"I'm bad and that's good," he mumbles. Vanellope isn't listening; she's chattering about her plans for the week and candy politics and half a dozen other things.

He'll be okay wherever he is, with friends like these.
