[Star Trek: The Next Generation/Legend of Korra] possible's slow fuse (Geordi/Data)
Title: possible's slow fuse
Fandom: Star Trek: The Next Generation/Legend of Korra
Length: 560 words
Prompt: fic_promptly: Star Trek: The Next Gen, Geordi La Forge/Data, Avatar (Tla/Korra) AU
Pairing: slight Geordi/Data
Other: Fusion fic, Geordi and Data in the Korra universe.
Excerpt: It makes Geordi want to laugh, when he thinks about it. When he thought he'd move to Republic City and get away from his small village and all the people who only knew him as that blind earthbender, he never anticipated making even stranger friends here. He didn't know there were any spirits who wanted to be human but he met Data after having been here a week, primarily because, as Data told him, he hadn't run away immediately.
"What are you working on?" Data asks, and he sounds so close that Geordi jumps and bangs his knees on the desk.
"You've got to stop doing that!" Geordi says, rubbing the affected area. "If you don't make any noise I don't know you're coming, since your feet don't touch the ground."
"I've been working on that," Data says calmly, "but even if they did, the pressure of a spirit's feet on the ground would probably not be enough for your earth senses to perceive. I will try to remember to announce my presence."

He doesn't know what Data looks like, but that's probably for the best. It makes Data happy when Geordi treats him just like another person. And Geordi has really learned to like Data; he might be strange, his previous life unknowable, but he tries very hard. He's a good friend and partner. He doesn't talk down to Geordi ever. He just wants to learn.
"Thanks," Geordi says, and he holds up the little scrap of metal for Data's inspection, turning it so Data can get a good look. "I'm not sure what it is yet. The Chief asked me to see what I could do to improve the cable spooling, so I'm thinking about an alternate design. This one should weigh a lot less, but I have to make sure it can handle the abuse."
"Hmm," Data says. It is a new affectation of his, conversational fillers. Whatever Data is, he thinks at astonishingly fast speeds. "I'm remembering a spidermonkey web I saw a few hundred years ago; the construction was quite fascinating. It may be helpful in this situation. You see--"
Data is wonderful at explaining. With his ideas and Geordi's metalbending engineering, they have a new prototype to present in under a week. Geordi goes to talk to Lin by himself, though. Data doesn't think it's a good idea to terrify policemen, and Geordi can't disagree with that, although he wishes his friend could accompany him more often. He has gotten so used to talking to someone he can't sense at all that he finds himself doing it in the market or on the street, and he is getting the kind of reputation you get for talking to yourself. In any case, Lin likes the design, and even admits it. begrudgingly, so it's a good day.
When Geordi gets back to his apartment, he tells Data about the meeting as he prepares dinner. Data has spent the day in a forest, communing with modern spidermonkeys, and he has an idea for some more improvements, so they work on that after dinner
"Have pleasant dreams, Geordi," Data tells him when Geordi says it's time for bed. His voice is always a mild monotone, but Geordi likes to hear him say it anyway.
"Good night, Data," Geordi says back, and he does, in fact, have good dreams.
