[Glee/Harry Potter] Kurt Hummel and the Annoying Gryffindor (Kurt & Rachel gen)

Title: Kurt Hummel and the Annoying Gryffindor
Fandom: Glee/Harry Potter fusion
Length: 1061 words
Prompt: Ooh, this sounds really fun. Hm... I want to say New Directions in Hogwarts! But if, um, that's a little too vague/big, what about just having Rachel, Brittany, Santana and Kurt? for [livejournal.com profile] _calex_
Pairing: Kurt & Rachel gen; Kurt/Finn and Rachel/Finn; Finn/Quinn mentioned
Other: Harry Potter fusion; set in a first episode AU.

Excerpt: "I thought this Glee Club was all about inter-House friendship?" Kurt lifts a perfectly manicured eyebrow. "When you invited me, I assumed that the invitation extended to all Slytherins."

"Eww, no, what?" Santana says immediately, looking from Kurt to Rachel distastefully. "We were just hoping to copy Kurt's homework when he was done. I'm not interested in singing with Mudbloods."

"I forgot the common room password again," Brittany volunteers.

"Are you honestly serious?"

Kurt waves lazily from his perch in the library chair; his legs are crossed so as to better show off his fancy green-and-silver striped socks. Every few minutes, the colors shift, moving dark to light and back to dark over a period of five minutes. They're his favorite socks, both because they're designer-made and because he often sits and watches them change during his more boring classes.

Rachel freezes. She has been "casually" walking by his table with a book in hand, but she gives up the pretense after only a moment. It's a Gryffindor thing, Kurt thinks with distaste - instead of being ashamed of her failure to keep her purposes secret, she just charges on, hoping that no one will care.

"Yes, Kurt?" she asks finally. He points at her and gestures in a small circle.

"I have no idea how you managed to find something that doesn't match with black," he declares, "but you have. I'm almost impressed." Almost as an afterthought, he continues, "You wanted to see me for something?"

Rachel opens her mouth and furrows her brow, wanting to field the insult, but also wanting to reveal her agenda without being distracted, which is what Kurt is counting on. Barbed insults just come with the territory of speaking to him. She drifts a little closer, but then awkwardly eyes the two girls that are also sitting at Kurt's table. Santana rolls her eyes. Brittany smiles.

"Why are they here?"

"I thought this Glee Club was all about inter-House friendship?" Kurt lifts a perfectly manicured eyebrow.

Santana gets up and grabs Brittany by the hand. "Come on, Brit, I remember it. Let's leave before we catch it."

"Catch what?" Brittany inquires, but she stands without protest. Santana begins to pull her away.

"Whatever Berry has, duh," she says, without looking back. Kurt and Rachel watch them go. Rachel is clearly thrown off balance for a moment, but then she rallies.

"It is open to all Houses. I simply knew that you had talent, so I came to you first. I heard you sing at the Christmas party last year."

Kurt makes a face. "'100 Bottles of Butterbeer' on the wall was really not my best performance. I blame - "

He cuts off suddenly, his mouth falling shut and his eyes darting to Rachel's, as if daring her to comment. She looks around again, but no one else is in this corner of the library; there simply isn't much call for Infectious Diseases of the Middle Ages if you aren't in a pre-Healer track. That's why she chose it as their covert meeting spot. So she sets her book down and takes Santana's seat. Kurt adjusts his tie fussily to hide the color that has risen to his cheeks.

"Finn," Rachel says. "Gryffindor, prefect and captain of the Quidditch team. The guy everyone seems to find attractive." She studies the table. Attractive or not, Finn has a very possessive girlfriend, Quinn, fellow Gryffindor and prefect. Finn is off limits to them both.

But he has an extraordinary singing voice and Rachel has been working on convincing him to join Glee all week. Even Professor Schuester has put in a word.

Of course, two stunning leads does not a Glee Club make, so she's also been studying her fellow students for talent. There are a few signed up already - a pair of nerdy Ravenclaws, the one with the floating wheelchair and the quiet Asian girl with the blue streaks in her hair; a brassy black girl from Hufflepuff; and - well, that's it. Kurt, if he joins. Rachel wants to have all of the Houses represented, and that's her first goal. It will make them seem legitimate.

Any... side projects (like staring at Finn, or kissing Finn or... anything else) are secret, as far as she's concerned. And she's pretty sure that Kurt feels the same way (and may have the same designs, but since he's missing some necessary equipment, she doesn't really feel too threatened). After all, Finn talked Kurt into singing in public, only had to cajole the smallest amount before he was up there, and when Finn threw an arm around him companionably, Kurt's voice almost broke. Rachel notices things like this. She notices everything about Finn Hudson, who is everything that she isn't at school - except that he's also a great singer.

"I don't know why you bring Finn up. Have you talked him into joining?" Kurt says, and his tone is just defensive enough for Rachel to know that she's right. She doesn't push it though; for once in her life, she dives for social skills and comes up with the right solution.

"He's been thinking about it. He really likes the idea of making friends from all Houses, not just Gryffindor."

Kurt studies his fingernails. "Really?" he says, as if he isn't invested at all.

Rachel nods.

"I'm not sure why you want to have a singing club at Hogwarts," Kurt says. "Why not Charms, or Gobstones, or Quidditch cheerleaders?"

"Because," Rachel says with a little smile, "singing is what I'm good at."

Kurt doesn't answer to that right away. They can hear people approaching, probably looking for this table and some privacy, so he gets up and begins to gather his things. Although Santana apparently wanted to copy his essay (on moonstones, Rachel reads upside-down), it's no more than half-done. He tucks it away in his designer bag and says, "When and where?"

"Friday afternoon in the Charms classroom," Rachel answers immediately, and then she squeals. Kurt sends her a poisonous look.

"No promises. I don't know if I want to be in a club with a bunch of Gryffindors anyway," he says, waving a hand in dismissal and beginning to walk away.

He waits until he's alone to begin to smile.

Glee Club, huh? Well, that's a start.
