[Glee] a good friend is cheaper than therapy (Kurt and Emma gen)

Title: a good friend is cheaper than therapy
Fandom: Glee
Length: 817 words
Prompt: [livejournal.com profile] morethan4sides: Kurt Hummel Needs a Friend Challenge: Emma.
Pairing: Kurt and Emma gen; mentions of Will/Emma and Carl/Emma
Other: Vague spoilers for 2x05. Also archived here.

Excerpt: So after Glee lets out one day, he knocks on her office door. He's wearing one of his favorite scarves and it's managed to avoid slushy damage all day, so he's feeling generous. Ms. Pillsbury, on the other hand, appears to be sorting her paperclips by color. She smiles at Kurt when he comes in, though, so he takes that as a positive sign.

Kurt Hummel does not come to Emma Pillsbury's office very often, despite the fact that he has a standing invitation that she's reiterated nervously several times. "No, thank you," he said, the last time she offered; "I'm getting pretty used to gay panic." He didn't say, And no offense, but your love life is worse than mine, mostly because he didn't want to have detention again.

But after the Rocky Horror production becomes the Rocky Horror Incident, he decides that they could both benefit from a little bit of extra happiness. He's watching as another possible relationship surrenders itself into the arms of Quinn Fabray (and wishing that they didn't have such similar tastes in boys). Emma's dealing with Neanderthals (aka straight men) who think of her as a prize to be won. Well, Carl isn't as bad as Will, but any adult male who'd join a school play just to keep an eye on his girlfriend has major issues in Kurt's eyes.

So after Glee lets out one day, he knocks on her office door.

"I need your help, Ms. Pillsbury," he says, sinking into the chair in front of her desk. He knows she likes feeling helpful. Sure enough, she abandons the paperclips and and sits up straight, focusing all of her attention on him.

"Yes, Kurt? I think I still have some PFLAG pamphlets around here somewhere..."

She turns her head as if she's going to get up and start looking, but he shakes his quickly. "You know that Mercedes is out of town this week. I am missing my better half," he says.

She considers. "Well, Kurt, you know that the rest of the Glee Club is there for you. You have other options."

He waves a hand dismissively. "I'm afraid that Rachel's fashion sense will wear off on me if I spend too much time in her presence. No, what I meant was, I have some free time and I think we could help each other."

Emma glances around her office as if searching for something she needs help with. Not finding it, she refocuses on Kurt's face. "I'm afraid I'm not quite following," she admits.

"I need to do some research for my fashion design project in art class," he says. "You need - " some confidence - "a new wardrobe. I need an excuse to go to the mall, and you need some new eyeliner." Something less raccoon-like. (Kurt has been priding himself on being choosy with his words recently. He hasn't lost his trademark bitch, because that would be giving in, but he's been working on the appearance of kindness, if for no other reason than to surprise people.)

"I'm not really sure that would be appropriate," Emma says after a moment's hesitation. "Students and teachers don't go to the mall together."

"And they don't participate in risque school plays, either, but we see how that goes," Kurt deadpans. "Sue gives all of the Cheerios a special field-trip form that allows them to leave grounds at any time." He pulls a paper out of his bag and waves it at her. "Usually we use it for executing plots against rival cheerleading squads and sneaking off campus for lunch, but I am perfectly willing to sacrifice sixth period English for the sake of... my art project."

He beams at her, and she smiles back, just a little, still looking uncertain.

"School-related," he prompts. "Field trip. Under your supervision, Miss Pillsbury. Last week when Mercedes and I were there, I saw a blue blouse that would go marvelously with your coloring. And it didn't even have ruffles, so that's already an improvement."

"I don't know what to say," she ventures.

"Say yes to the dress," Kurt answers promptly. "Or the shirt, or the eye shadow. Not for Mr. Schue or Dr. Howell. For you."

She hesitates for another long moment. "I don't think you need to actually skip class to do this. After school might - "

Kurt seizes on the victory. "Three o'clock, Miss P. My baby is parked in the back lot. Just had a safety inspection and I wash it every Saturday, so it should meet your cleanliness standards. Don't be late! I don't want to get caught in traffic."

He stands up and heads for the door, pausing in the doorway to grin back at her for a moment.

"People should see your fabulousness on the outside too, you know," he tells her.

"Thanks, Kurt," she says, her voice warm like she means it, and at three o'clock he's opening the car door for her like a gentleman.

Aww, this is really cute, and I like Kurt feeling sorry for Emma. The poor girl really does need a break. (I also, as always, enjoy having someone point out the infinite levels of highly inappropriate absurdity.) But, seriously, a really charming fic, short and sweet. I like it.

Thank you very much! I think Kurt is probably the least enchanted with Mr. Schue, and most willing to point out his absurdity. |D I think Emma could use a break too. I appreciate the comment!
