Tina shakes her head. Sunshine keeps talking. People can tell if you're Chinese or Japanese or Filipino or another race where she comes from. And they don't assume that you're related to everyone with the same skin color and eye shape. And they don't ask, like your culture is a guessing game for them, like they'll get a prize for figuring it out.

"Ohio is different," Tina says, hesitates. She doesn't know what to tell her. She doesn't say, If that's the worst you get, you're lucky. She doesn't say, We're exotic here in a sea of white people. She doesn't say, It gets easier. You'll get used to it. She doesn't say, Correcting them doesn't help, or They don't even think it's rude.

"Just stick with me and Mike," she says finally. "Asian people stick together in this school. We'll help you out."

Sunshine smiles. Tina tries to smile reassuringly back.
