When she saw Mercedes walk by her office with that awful thermos in her hands, Emma winced. Sue had prevented interference with her "training routines" in the past by claiming it was a purely physical exercise and that a school psychiatrist, Edna, was completely unqualified to judge its effectiveness.

But Emma had the class on eating disorders when she was in college. She could still remember the first time a kid walked into her office (a tinier office, back then, though just as immaculate) and lifted her shirt when she couldn't find a way to spit out the problem. Emma's fingers could have fit easily between each of the girl's ribs. But she hadn't touched; she'd called the girl's parents and fed her crackers (she only took one) while they waited and talked about eating and coping behavior.

Emma had cards with her free student hours printed on them, and while the kids were at lunch, she slipped one into Mercedes's locker. She gave a speech to Mercedes's health class about healthy diet and she asked Will to keep an eye on the girl for her. She did everything except what she wanted to do, which was to snatch that bottle out of Mercedes's hands. She could have done it, but that wouldn't have taught the new Cheerio anything. She needed a moment of her own to pull herself back before this got too dangerous. And Mercedes was a smart girl. She had good friends. Emma thought that she'd get it.

The day after Mercedes told the entire school that she was beautiful and they were too, she slipped into Emma's office during free period. Emma didn't have a lot she needed to say. The listening was what was important. So she smiled and encouraged.

When Mercedes left, she left the thermos under her chair. Emma took it home, disinfected it, and then put fake flowers in it, setting it on her windowsill.

Every child bloomed, but it took time.

And this is how the show should be using Emma.
