Excerpt: But the years wore on and her heart hurt more and more. [Post-ending fic. Probably the only CC fic I will ever write, but it wouldn't leave me alone!]
Sometimes Rosette didn't think he was coming back.
She'd looked into his eyes and he'd promised, and she knew that he would. If it were at all possible, he'd finish chasing daemons and come back. Come home.
But the years wore on and her heart hurt more and more. If Chrono had been there, he would have punched her in the shoulder, said, "Suck it up!" and then dragged her off on another thin lead to Joshua. But it was Joshua who was here, and he wiped her forehead with a cool cloth and used a soothing voice. He liked taking care of her. He didn't realize that his older sister could take care of herself. Though not so much, anymore.
Sometimes she sat in the church between services and shut her eyes, waiting, praying. Even though the pews were hard, she sometimes fell asleep there.
And it wasn't that she didn't believe in him, not at all, but he was taking his sweet time, dammit! And he'd taken enough of her time already that there wasn't much left. Even while gone Chrono was using up her lifespan. All of this waiting...
And then one day she felt the pain, and she knew it would be the final one. She shut her eyes and hoped she'd see him one last time, even as just a product of a wishful mind. She still missed him.
But there he was, finally, and she wanted to hit him and kiss him and hit him again, but she settled for a hug. They left that place, right then and there, headed toward a bright future where Rosette's heart didn't hurt and Chrono's injuries would heal.
They flew toward New Eden.
