Excerpt: He looked up at her and smiled, then kissed the pale underside of her wrist.

He reached out and kissed her hand. She let him even as her other hand flexed and formed a fist. He looked up at her and smiled, then kissed the pale underside of her wrist. Despite herself, she shivered.

"What do you want from me?" she asked. Never before had a client entered her shop in such a manner. The elaborate costume and icy demeanor tended to throw them off.

"A promise, in trade for a kiss," he replied, lifting his hand as if to touch her cheek, even as she moved away.

"What kiss has the same value as a promise?" she replied, remembering the men she'd known and the promises they hadn't kept in the end.

"Promise me," he said, breathing close to her face, too close, "that I will never be alone again. And my kiss shall seal the bargain-- you won't be alone either."

"I like to be alone," she tried to say, but she shut her eyes as his lips brushed hers, and it was done.
