Excerpt: The woman smiled and answered, but Tomoyo didn't hear what she said, because behind her someone on roller skates tripped and scraped across the sidewalk.
It was the oddest chance that they would meet again like this. Tomoyo had been through Hong Kong on her mother's business many times since her original visit with Sakura, enough times that the bright street markets and colorful birds didn't even catch her eye.
But then again, there was Sakura to think of, and so she found herself wandering a familiar street, her hands darting through the boxes, looking for a trinket to bring home to her best friend. It was noon and the streets were full, strangers every moment brushing past her suit-clad shoulders and sensible shoes.
"What wood is this?" she asked, her Chinese flawless, as she held up a set of hair chopsticks embossed with small flowers. The woman smiled and answered, but Tomoyo didn't hear what she said, because behind her someone on roller skates tripped and scraped across the sidewalk.
She turned, worried that the skater would be injured in the press of the crowd. She took the girl's hands to pull her to her feet and that's when she noticed that the skater had a familiar face.
"Meiling-chan?" she said, incredulous.
"Tomoyo-chan?" The Chinese girl was no less surprised.
"It is mahogany," the vendor said for the fifth time, enuciating clearly for the foreigner. Tomoyo didn't hear her. She helped Meiling to her feet, absently replacing the chopsticks on the table, and the two of them walked away together, talking and laughing.
"You should be more careful!" the vendor yelled after the roller-skater, irritated to lose a sale, but Tomoyo's hand was soft on Meiling's arm and the vendor's words were lost in the crowd.
