He smiled.

"I hate you," she said, irritated that he didn't bother to wipe the blood away, that he wouldn't let her be angry at him, because he was never angry back.

"I know," he said sympathetically. She slapped him again and another half-moon filled itself with blood.

"Don't go away," she cried, and it was barely a whisper.

He held her; her bony arms were sharp through his heavy cloak. She clutched his arm until her knuckles turned white.

"I don't want to leave you," he muttered.

She let go of his arm and very deliberately left him, walking in careful, measured step so she wouldn't be tempted to turn around.

She was sure that the idiot was still smiling.
