Excerpt: The next year when he came back to the shrine, it was full of people, but empty to him.

The next year when he came back to the shrine, it was full of people, but empty to him.

"Buy an omamori, sir?" the unfamiliar shrine maiden said to him. "Good luck in the future, love, money?"

Touya was knocked from his memories of Kaho and nodded before he heard the question. After a moment a small token was placed in his hand, with the character for love stark against the red.

He put it in his pocket and wandered around the festival for a little while. It seemd so dull without Kaho here. Her soft smiles livened up the festivities, and she was so much better at suspending disbelief than he. She almost convinced him to believe in magic. Touya didn't believe in anything he couldn't see. There may have been spirits in the world, but that didn't mean this little charm would do him any good.

Still, he kept it for a while, a small red token thrown in the top drawer of his desk. It met misfortune one day when he was rifling through the drawer for some notecards he knew were in the back and accidently tore the seal. Annoyed by the memory, he threw the amulet onto his desk and finally found his cards.

"You're not supposed to break the seal, To-ya," Yukito informed him, wide-eyed, from his position on Touya's bed, where he was doing his homework. Touya picked it up.

"I don't believe in that kind of thing," he said with a laugh, tossing the amulet into the trash and handing Yukito the cards. "Will these work?"

"Perfectly," Yukito said, and his smile made Touya blush a little, not that he cared about his best friend like that or anything, he was sure.

"I heard that Mizuki-sensei is back in town," Yukito said after a few minutes. Touya looked up from his work and for a moment his eyes trailed over to the red omamori in the wastebasket.

"I don't want to talk about it," he replied, and they got back to work, though a part of Touya was considering buying a new omamori this year, and telling Yukito why.
