Excerpt: He dropped the weapon and it clattered loudly on the floor when he strode menacingly into the kitchen and found a plush toy raiding the refridgerator, humming and talking to himself. It was one of Sakura's plushes, and for some reason it had an Osakan accent.
"To-ya. To-ya..."
Yukito poked Touya once, and then twice more, but the other boy didn't react.
"To-ya..." Yukito said insistently.
"Mmm?" Touya said sleepily, cracking an eye open.
"Did you hear that?"
"Hear mmm?" Touya said.
"I heard something downstairs."
"Go see," Touya grunted, shutting his eyes.
"It sounded like a voice," Yuki insisted, his eyes wide. Touya sighed internally, but shifted in the bed so he could get up.
"See if I ask you to stay over again," he grumbled. "Studying for midterms or not."
Touya found a pair of socks and sneaked to the stairwell, where he listened for Yukito's "voice." He was unpleasantly shocked to hear humming coming from the kitchen. It didn't sound like either his father or his sister.
Fully awake now, Touya quietly descended the stairs and grabbed an umbrella from the umbrella rack. It wasn't the best weapon, but it should be enough to scare off a thief, that and his imposing presence.
He dropped the weapon and it clattered loudly on the floor when he strode menacingly into the kitchen and found a plush toy raiding the refridgerator, humming and talking to himself. It was one of Sakura's plushes, and for some reason it had an Osakan accent, in which it was excitedly debating between the pudding his father had made yesterday and the cookies from the night before.
It started in surprise when the umbrella fell, and began to sweat heavily.
"This... is a dream...?" it said uncertainly after a moment, waving its paws. Touya had always thought this plush was suspicious, but he was amazed.
"It better be a dream," Touya said.
The plushy because visibly worried. "This is a dream, and you are sleepwalking.... In the morning you will remember nothing..."
"I was going to take that to school tomorrow," Touya said, pointing at the plate of cookies. With an obvious effort of will, the plush put the plate back in the refridgerator.
"Keep it down," Touya said, yawning. The strangeness of this discovery hadn't quite set in yet and already he was wondering whether the gold bear-thing was in fact a figment of dream. He turned around and went back up the stairs.
"What was it?" Yuki asked, sitting up as Touya came into the room.
"A dream," Touya said, yawning again, and he climbed back into bed with Yukito. "Now scoot over. We have to get up early to study some more."
Yuki obliged, and they went back to sleep. And if they woke in the morning cuddled close to one another, neither one of them would admit it, and deal with the way that their friendship was headed. Not yet.
In the morning, Touya tripped over the umbrella that he'd forgotten he'd dropped. It made him wonder about that strange dream he had.
