Excerpt: And the thing of it was that he wasn't alone anymore, but not only did he have Touya-- he also had Yue. And Yue liked being alone.
Yukito hated waking up alone. He'd done it for years, not understanding what a wonderful, simple pleasure it was to awaken with someone else breathing softly beside him. He'd been alone for a long time, and when he found Touya, he thought that time was over.
And the thing of it was that he wasn't alone anymore, but not only did he have Touya-- he also had Yue. And Yue liked being alone.
The room was silent, except for his own breathing, but Yukito knew someone else was with him. Still, he felt like he was alone.
Yue, he thought, knowing the guardian to be awake.
Hmm.
He saved our life, you know.
Your life, Yue said sourly.
Yours as well. You couldn't fly without him, you know. You couldn't protect Sakura-chan.
It would have been simpler if he had let us fade.
Then none of us would have been happy.
He's asleep on the couch, Yue said, resigned, and spoke no more.
Yukito smiled a little bit. Yue was fonder of Touya than he would admit. Then Yuki slipped into the other room and carefully wrapped himself around Touya, who was indeed on the couch. Touya was a heavy sleeper, and didn't even awaken when Yuki joined him. He pulled Yuki close (and since the couch was quite narrow, they were very close) and continued to snore quietly. Yuki shut his eyes.
In the morning, Touya would be startled by Yuki's presence and the apparent dissolving of their argument, and in the ensuing confusion Yuki's wake-up call would be his body hitting the floor. But he would sit up, rubbing his head, but smiling, because there was nothing worse than waking alone.
No, there was nothing worse than waking without Touya.
