"You have issues," his teacher wrote on his essay in glaring red. The assignment had been to write about Father's Day, and make his teacher feel good about all the family love.

"I have no father," Watanuki had written.

He supposed she hadn't read his personal files. Why lie? He didn't remember Father's Day. He was sure it wasn't all that special, anyway. His dad didn't need another tie.

To prove that he didn't have issues, he took flowers to the grave the next second Sunday in June. He kneeled there for a moment in silence.

It wasn't anything special.
