"Sometimes I wish I were a woman," Kinomoto Touya said to himself. The jewelry spread artfully across the velvet in front of him twinkled. This was the fifth store in a week and he still hadn't found something he knew would be perfect. Women were good at this. He was almost desperate enough to drag Sakura with him, but he wanted to keep this a secret. Sakura wasn't so good with secrets.

"Can I help you, sir?" the saleslady said. She had long blonde hair and an insincere smile. He doubted that she could, but he nodded anyway. She studied him for a moment, decided (correctly) that he was just a college student and she wouldn't get much of a commission out of him, and began the usual spiel.

"So are you looking for something for your special someone?" she asked sugarly. He nodded. She waved her hand and drew him over to the popular engagement rings display, with all of the expensive ones in front, just in case he had a rich father and wasn't as poor as most college students.

"An engagement ring," Touya admitted. He looked with distaste at the display. All of the rings there were frilly, femininine, with gaudy diamonds or excess stones. They were women's rings, and they were rich old women's rings.

"Oh, what a lucky girl, hmm," the saleswoman said. She grabbed the most expensive ring from under the counter and waved it under Touya's nose. He wrinkled it as though it smelled bad. The diamond was the size of Kansas and the side stones dark amethyst, almost black. He hated it. In fact, he hated this lady.

"A lucky man, actually," Touya said. He thought that might surprise her, and it did. Her nose rose perceptibly in the air and she tried to lead him over to a small, much cheaper display. A man wouldn't care what ring he had on his finger. They never did.

"I have to go," Touya said, and strode out of the building into the cold night. Where was he going to have to go? How did the men on television make it look so easy? And why was it so darn cold, anyway? He could trim down one of the icicles growing on his nose and give it to Yuki.

He knew Yuki wouldn't really care what it looked like. The sentiment was what mattered. Still, he wanted to give his beloved something special. In his mind he started going through all the jewelry shops in Tomoeda. Been there, been there...

It wasn't surprising that in his distraction he bumped into somebody. He caught her hand before she fell, apologizing profusely. When he brought her back to her feet, he was surprised to see a familiar face above the navy-blue pea coat--Daidouji-san, his sister's best friend. If he wasn't so desperate, maybe he wouldn't have considered it. But Daidouji-san was good at keeping secrets, and she was a girl, and she liked to shop...

"Daidouji-san, can I ask you a favor?"

She laughed and said, "Of course. You love Sakura as much as I do."

He explained to Daidouji-san what he needed. After she quit saying "kawaii!" she agreed to help him.

He'd never seen someone shop quite like Tomoyo. The first thing she did was discover his budget, and then she dragged him off to Tokyo. He was surprised to find that most jewelry stores didn't close until ten, and that a few knew Miss Daidouji's reputation enough to bend their hours a little.

It was ten-thirty and they were all weary when he found the right one tucked in quietly among much flashier jewelry. It was a simple silver band with two diamonds inset. He knew it would look wonderful on Yukito's hand.

All that was remaining was the hard part--he had to ask him.

*

Touya wasn't sure when he had decided that he needed to spend the rest of his life with Yuki. They didn't even have an official dating anniversary. They had just fallen together one day and it had felt right to kiss Yuki. Yuki had gasped for a second in surprise and then he didn't protest.

Occasionally Touya still saw the moon angel in his Yukito--a flash of disdainful silver eyes, a feather on the bedroom floor. But even Yue was becoming less disdainful. A couple weeks ago, Yukito had poked Touya in the side and giggled.

"What?"

"I think that Yue is starting to like you," he said. "He says that he's become used to your presence."

Touya laughed and tousled Yuki's hair. "Good thing, since I'm around a lot."

Now that he had the tacit approval of Yukito's other half, he felt he was free to ask for Yuki's hand. Yue was Yukito's only real "family," if you could call him that. So later that week he had begun the search that had finally culminated in the engagment ring.

The engagement ring that Touya had been carrying around for two weeks now on a chain around his neck, waiting for the right moment. Or waiting for his fear to go away. Or waiting for the right words to say.

Touya felt like a coward. Each day he woke up and looked in the mirror. He told himself that this was the day. He outlined his speech (which he kept folded in his pocket in case the time came and he forgot the words he wanted to say). He put on a nice sweater and went out to work or to visit Yukito or a million other things--

And put it off for another day.

It wasn't that he was uncertain. He wanted this. He had thought that maybe after he gave his magic to Yue, the pull he had towards Yukito would go away, like it had for the brat (yes, he noticed more than he commented on). But it hadn't. In fact, Yuki had quietly taken care of him for the few weeks that he had been out of shape due to the loss, and it had made Touya care for his friend even more. It was just--he was scared.

"Onii-chan, what are you thinking so hard about?" Sakura asked with a giggle. Touya blinked and remembered he was at the breakfast table. He hadn't touched his cereal. He stared down at it as though the flakes would form an answer for him.

"Trying to decide when to give Yuki that ring you have around your neck, hmm? Good taste, by the way. Looks like something Tomoyo would pick out."

Touya's eyes widened with surprise, and then he made a low noise of anger. "Kaijuu, it's none of your business."

"I would suggest Christmas. It's very romantic, you know. That's when Syaoran is going to give me mine, I think..." She trailed off, starry-eyed. Touya stood up quickly.

"What is the brat giving you?!?"

"Nothing," she said quickly. "I'm late for school! And Dad said it was okay!" she called over her shoulder as she rushed to the door. He gazed after her as the door slammed. The high school uniform made her look too old. And when did his sister get so tall? She hadn't caught up with him, of course, but she'd really grown since the last time he had noticed. Her hair was beginning to curl at the end, like their mother's had.

That brat better treat her right, Touya thought sourly, or he'll have to answer to me and Yuki both.

Lord, it's going to be hard to let her go.

He headed out the door. He was going to meet Yuki at the corner and walk with him to their eight o'clock class. Maybe then would be the time...?

*

"Merry Christmas," Yukito greeted him, pulling the door wide. His home, usually quite sparsely decorated and dimly lit--for what use did a man living alone have for adornment?--was festooned with red and silver. There were thick white candles everywhere. The kotatsu, the low table most Japanese have in their living rooms, was already warmed, in contrast to the rest of the house. Touya sat down and tucked his feet under comfortably. Yukito went into the kitchen and brought back their dinner, then sat down next to Touya. He seemed a little uncomfortable tonight, antsy. He kept getting up and wandering around with mumbled excuses.

Touya was beginning to worry. This was Christmas, one of the most romantic holidays, and his boyfriend couldn't find the time to sit and eat with him?

He lifted a chopstick and gestured at Yuki, who was across the room adjusting his Christmas lights. "Come sit down with me, Yuki and eat this food. It's really good..."

If food wouldn't get Yukito, nothing would. And when Yuki pensively shook his head, Touya stopped eating too. He leaned back onto the hardwood floor. Had he said something wrong recently? Wasn't their relationship okay? He thought it was...

Yuki didn't want to break up with him, did he? He almost smacked his head against the floor as he had the thought. No, they couldn't... why would they? Why would Yuki want to?

He shut his eyes and when he opened them again Yuki was standing over him, biting his lip. Touya took a moment to drown into those hazel eyes, the beginning of a smile on his lips. Lord, that boy was beautiful. Yuki sat down next to him, a little bit apart, and just stared. Feeling uncomfortable, he sat up.

"To-ya?" Yuki said. "Can I... can I ask you something?"

Yukito was rubbing his hands together unconsciously, one of his nervous habits. He was really worried about whatever this was. Touya felt choked. His heart began to beat faster. He nodded past the lump in his throat.

"To-ya, I... we've been together for a long time, and I... just wondered..." Yuki turned away, his face bright red. He began to fumble in his pocket. Touya couldn't say anything. He watched his beloved's beautiful hands. Abruptly Yuki stood and turned away.

Touya found his voice--well, more like a wail of misery. "Are you breaking up with me?" he asked, hating how whiny he sounded but not being able to help it. He was supposed to be the strong one.

Yuki turned back to look at him with astonishment in his eyes. When he saw how hurt Touya looked he was on his knees at Touya's side. He put his hand at the nape of Touya's neck and pressed their foreheads together. Touya could still feel him shaking, could still feel himself shaking.

"I'm not breaking up with you," he said, leaning back to look into the dark-haired boy's eyes. He laughed a little, then pulled back and shifted up on one knee. He took a deep breath to steady himself, and then spoke.

"Touya, will you marry me?" he asked, and opened his hand to reveal a gold ring. Touya gasped. He looked at Yuki, he looked at the ring, and then he started to laugh. He laughed until he cried, and when he opened his eyes he saw Yuki crying too. Immediately he rose and grabbed Yuki into a full body hug; he pulled him to his feet and kissed him fiercely.

Yuki sniffled. When Touya let him go, he wiped at his eyes. "Why are you laughing at me?" he asked pitifully.

Touya grinned and pulled the chain from under his shirt to reveal Yuki's ring. "I was going to ask you!" he said joyfully. "So is that a yes?"

"Yes! Yes! Yes!" Yuki said and hugged Touya. Carefully they put the rings on each other's fingers. Touya held his hand up to the dim candlelight.

"I like it," he said. It was simple, but strong. It was something he could wear for the rest of his life, easily.

"I'm glad," Yuki said, and snuggled into his shoulder. "It's so hard to pick out a ring for somebody! I almost wished," he said in a conspiratorial whisper, "that I was a woman, so it would be easier."

Touya laughed and gave his fiance a kiss on the check. "I know, I know..."

Awwww!! I LOVE the parallelism between Touya and Yukito!!!

He had thought that maybe after he gave his magic to Yue, the pull he had towards Yukito would go away, like it had for the brat (yes, he noticed more than he commented on). For a MOMENT I misread that with Touya/Syaoran implications, like perhaps Touya had been attracted to Syaoran's magic and was expressing it in his own little Touyaish way, and I went "O___O!!! OOOH!!!" xD;;;; how totally bizarre.

Ooh, I'll have to correct that. Glad you got it after reading through again.

I just thought that there are all of those "Touya proposes" fics, and what if Yuki got up the courage? ^_^
