Excerpt: "Do you think love exists for us, Meiling?"

The day Tomoyo kissed Meiling, Meiling pulled back, wide-eyed, and stared.

"What was that about?"

Tomoyo laughed. "Do you think love exists for us, Meiling?"

Meiling wiped her mouth off and said, "I don't know." She looked away. "I doubt it."

"Love passed us up, didn't it? And here we are at twenty-five, sharing an apartment and trying to get by. Why did you move back to Japan, Meiling?"

"To get away from Syaoran," Meiling mumbled. "I don't see how this is relevant--"

"And I moved away from Tomoeda because I couldn't see them together without it hurting, and I didn't want her to know. And here we are now. How many men have you dated, looking for Syaoran? How many green-eyed women have I hurt, trying to find her again?"

"Too many," Meiling said. They'd been living together for almost three years, and Tomoyo had never came out and said she had been in love with Sakura, but Meiling wasn't stupid. She'd known.

"So why don't we just give up, Meiling?" Tomoyo said, sighing. She leaned back and threw her arm over her eyes. "Why don't we just throw in the towel? I thought... for a second... that maybe you and I... but it was just an idle thought. Sorry for kissing you." A few tears leaked out from under Tomoyo's arm.

"It's okay," Meiling said. She scooted closer on the couch to Tomoyo and gently pulled Tomoyo forward, letting her rest her head on her chest. A long time again, Tomoyo had done her that favor. She could only return it.

"If we know it can't be real, maybe it won't hurt as badly," Meiling whispered into Tomoyo's ear. Then gently, she kissed her ear.

"Won't it hurt more?" Tomoyo murmured, raising her face and letting Meiling kiss her neck.

"Love me, because love doesn't exist, and I have tried everything that does," Meiling said, pulling Tomoyo into an embrace, and they tried their best to make it real.

;-; *sniffles for Tomoyo and Mei-ling* They work out well, both having unrequited love.

I'd like to ship them straight off, but I just have this feeling that they would have such a dysfunctioncal relationship, coming from where they are. But I do think it's interesting.

Once again, I find that last line such wraps the story so very nice.

By the way, I'm not too familiar with Trigun (clicked out of curiosity) but the link for the fic didn't work. ^^/

Thank you. I loved that prompt. It immediately made me think of the dysfunction Tomoyo/Meiling dynamic I love so much.

Thanks for telling me about Trigun. I posted the fic twice and apparently deleted the wrong one! I'll go fix it. ^^
