Sometimes when Yugi dreams he wanders through Yami's mind. He doesn't think that Yami knows; there are a thousand rooms, all quiet, that Yami never enters.
Yami's mind is like an Escher painting, Yugi thinks when they study Escher in art class. There's always something completely extraordinary around the bend, and one cannot lose the feeling that something is wrong with the entire thing, with the way one's eye has to bend to take in the upside-down staircases and the sideways doors. Yugi thinks that Escher is a good representation of Yami's mind, all twisted staircases (memories) and niches in which the pleasant memories (all few) are tucked away.
One night he meets Yami in the largest chamber, darkness all around him. He sees the way that the pharaoh's eyes flicker across the ceiling and wonders if he sees all of the rooms that Yugi sees, or if he has buried or lost these places. Yami does not seem surprised to see him.
"You see a thousand rooms at rest," Yami said, his voice echoing. "And nine hundred of those I cannot enter, hikari."
Yugi nods. He doesn't know what else to say.
"Can you tell me what I cannot remember?" the pharaoh asks earnestly. Yugi sits down on the warm, brick floor and begins to speak. The lights rise as he talks, speaking of warm sands and old friends and the difficulty of ruling a kingdom. Yami looks around in wonderment at the sight.
And when Yugi stops, awakens, disappears from this place, Yami goes to the warmest, happiest memory room he can find, and finally he sleeps.
