Summary: Even in the hard times, Tomoyo wrote Syaoran letters. She made him promise they'd be friends forever.
Before I left for Hong Kong the last time, Tomoyo made me swear that we'd be friends forever. We were eighteen, graduates of Seijyuu High, and she stuck her pinky out and smiled.
I promised.
She wrote me letters twice a month, and I did my best to write back, though I was wrapped up in wedding preparations and preparing for my new life. She continued to write as Sakura's smile faded, as her voice became lost in the Chinese throng, and she wrote me advice about the arguments Sakura and I were suddenly having.
It was good advice, but Sakura left me anyway, and suddenly I had much more time to write than I did before.
We promised to be friends forever, and I'm sure I strained that promise with my weepy and angry letters. I begged Tomoyo to tell me what I had done wrong, what I could do to win Sakura back.
Tomoyo had no answers for me, but she did have sympathy and the report about the activities of our old friends and the weather. And honestly, that was perhaps more calming than rehashing all of the things I had done wrong. (Eventually Sakura sent me a list. It was long, and before I could finish it, I crumbled it up and threw it away.)
Tomoyo was my dearest friend, my most loyal friend, and I almost wasn't surprised to get a letter one week early telling me that she was getting married, and she wanted me to give her away.
I said I would on the condition that she would continue to write me letters-- and of course, that we would still be friends forever.
