It's not safe to do when Vader is aboard, but sometimes when he's very far away, off duty stormtroopers speculate on who he might have been -- a jaguar, a bird of prey, maybe, something dangerous that you'd never see coming -- but no one knows for sure who his daemon was, before the lake of fire and the suit and the name.
(She had been beautiful, once, the little weasel-like creature that was one of the only mammals that could survive on Tatooine, mostly by burrowing all day and creeping around at night -- but now Geula was a quiet shadow of her old self, and he hardly heard her voice anymore at all.)
