[Steven Universe] quenchless fidelity (Pearl gen)

Title: quenchless fidelity
Fandom: Steven Universe
Length: 281 words
Prompt: fic_promptly: Steven Universe, Garnet + Amethyst + Pearl + Steven, sometimes Steven says or does things that remind them of Rose Quartz
Pairing: Pearl gen
Other: n/a

Excerpt: Pearl had thought things would be easier once he mastered his powers and joined them as much as a full Gem as he was able to be, given his half-human limitations. She hadn't thought that the older Steven would get, the more he would remind her of his mother in other ways.

It happened more and more often now. Steven would stop them fighting with just a sad look or a few words, and it was like Rose was still here, the cheerful peacemaker. Once the war had ended, she couldn't stand anyone fighting.

If the fight was serious, if Pearl was too frustrated or Amethyst too angry or Garnet too coldly furious, he'd follow them. It didn't matter where, and that was like her too. She was stubborn underneath the softness -- no one ever told her no.

Pearl had thought things would be easier once he mastered his powers and joined them as much as a full Gem as he was able to be, given his half-human limitations. She hadn't thought that the older Steven would get, the more he would remind her of his mother in other ways. He was his own person. He'd never even gotten to meet her. It made no sense that their personalities would match so well, but they did.

She knew that the others saw it too. Sometimes Garnet hesitated too long, and sometimes Amethyst bit her lip hard, like she was pressing something down. Even Greg noticed, and she'd never thought of him as particularly observant (of course he saw the way that Rose Quartz shone, who could have missed it?).

Steven didn't have her memories -- Pearl knew that. He wouldn't have lied about it. But Rose Quartz was still here, like she'd promised when she announced her pregnancy. Pearl had been sure that she was gone forever, but she'd left them part of herself, more than the gem.

When she hugged Steven, he always leaned in, and Pearl held tight.
