"Is this life-changing for you?" Azula asks, and Toph can't tell if she's kidding. She hates that about Azula -- Azula is always keeping her on her toes. There is nothing predictable about her, and her body lies all the time.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that Toph hated Azula at one time, but now she just feels a brief annoyance. She thinks she's getting used to her. She understands now how Azula commanded respect, and Toph can respect her strength. That being said, she's in no hurry to play a trust game with the Fire Nation princess, although she has been, these past few days.

"I wanted Zuko to come," Toph answers, flippant, "but he was busy, so you'd better work harder."

They are crouched behind a number of boxes in a warehouse, and Toph is making mental notes on the case to dictate later. It's a policing habit she can't shake, even when she is supposedly on vacation. They'd ducked in here for a quick source of shelter, but they couldn't stay. There are people searching for them.

Well, 'vacation.' Had anyone actually believed that she'd go on vacation to Ember Island? At the time, she had hoped so, but either it hadn't been a convincing fiction, or someone has tipped off the guys that she and Azula are here to catch. Their beach house is at this moment still burning to the ground. Toph barely got out without burning her feet, and she has Azula to thank for this, even if Azula said she was only doing it because she didn't want to burn to death either.

Whatever her excuse, Toph appreciates it.

"An idiot is trying to sneak up on us," Toph tells Azula. Even if they weren't in a building with a concrete floor, she'd hear him. His footsteps echo. You just can't get good minions nowadays.

"I'm not deaf," Azula answers. "You want this one, or the guy standing by the door waiting for us to come out?"

"I'm not big on the stealth portion of this show," Toph answers. "I'll take this guy. Don't kill yours please. We'll need him for the trial."

"Fine," Azula says, and again, Toph can't tell if she's honestly disappointed or just screwing around. It doesn't matter. Toph reaches down for the earth and concentrates on her task. When the man is squirming, half buried in concrete, she goes to check on Azula. The other man has no visible burns, but he is sitting quietly on the ground with his hands on his head. Toph is impressed.

"Good one," she says, thumping Azula on the shoulder, and Azula grunts. "Now we play Bad Cop, Bad Cop until we get some answers."

"Now that sounds like a game I'd like," Azula says, and Toph grins.

One life-changing field trip, indeed.
