Summary/Notes/Warnings: Sakura and Syaoran muse on Sakura's parents and their love. Could their bond ever be as strong?
"Why did I take this class?" Sakura moaned, pressing her forehead into the book as though she could learn by osmosis. Syaoran looked up from a particularly difficult calculus problem and smiled at her. That always made her happy.
Today, however, his magic wasn't working. The corners of her mouth barely twitched. She raised her head out of the book and rolled over on the bed closer to him, and ticked his foot.
"Hey!" Syaoran protested good-naturedly "Okay, what are you having trouble with?"
She showed him what she was working on--using the basic trig functions, something Syaoran had grasped two years ago, but his girlfriend just wasn't good with math. He sat up and she tucked herself back against him and watched him draw a diagram and explain things. When he wanted to, Syaoran could be very patient, and he did his best to help her understand.
"I see!" she said finally. "That's a good memory trick--SOACAHTOA. Sine is opposite over adjacent--like this--" she said pointing, and he nodded. She had it.
He thought she would move then and they could go back to finishing homework so they could meet Tomoyo and a couple friends at the movie theater, but she didn't move. She snuggled back against him and said, "Syaoran, I really love you."
"I love you too," he said, confused at the abrupt change in conversation. She giggled at his confused face and then said, "This just reminds me of my parents. My dad used to help my mom with her math. If it wasn't for him, she might not have graduated high school."
Syaoran nodded and stroked her arm. He liked to hear about her parents' romance. He didn't know anything about how his parents met, or dated. He couldn't even imagine his mother with her hair down, much less letting someone else take it down. As for his father, who knew? The man had been gone by the time he was born, from overwork and stress. All he had was a blurry photograph of a man wearing Li ceremonial robes, a man with his eyes and somewhat scruffy hair. His eldest sister told him once that he looked like their father, and that sometimes that made their mother sad.
"Do you think we can love as much as my parents did?" Sakura asked in a dreamy voice. "And want to be together forever?"
Syaoran had no doubts, and he said so. And a woman that neither of them could see-- though maybe they could have sensed her, were they trying-- laughed and said, "She picked a good one, just like I did."
