Excerpt: It took them a long time to figure out where Mulan had gone, even though the sword had gone with her; hours of worrying and calling and searching until Zhou's leg burned icy with pain.

It took them a long time to figure out where Mulan had gone, even though the sword had gone with her; hours of worrying and calling and searching until Zhou's leg burned icy with pain - and then he remembered her outburst, and it all fell into place after that (someone had seen her - had seen him - passing with the horse, and who else could it be?).

Li clutched at her skirt, her knuckles white, cycling through worry and fear and anger; "What will everyone say?" she asked Zhou finally, as if it were her real concern, perhaps because it was the safest question to be uneasy over.

"That does not matter," Zhou answered, taking her hand, "as long as she comes home safely"; he knew it was unlikely, having been to war himself, and yet, all they had was hope, so they clung to that, and to each other.
