[Doctor Who] impossibilities vanish (Nine/Rose)

Title: impossibilities vanish
Fandom: Doctor Who
Length: 203 words
Prompt: Kristi - Nine/Rose, unexpected reaction
Pairing: slight Nine/Rose
Other: He wanted, suddenly, to reach out and touch her, to finger the silk of her dress and feel the warmth of her cheek. It was the first time he'd really allowed himself to want something since long before the war.

When she came out of the wardrobe, dressed to the nines, the Doctor hadn't expected to react the way he did. He wanted, suddenly, to reach out and touch her, to finger the silk of her dress and feel the warmth of her cheek. It was the first time he'd really allowed himself to want something since long before the war. Since Grace, perhaps, and he'd stolen a kiss from her and wouldn't have minded more then. He'd been a romantic.

"Blimey!" he said, before he could stop himself. "You look beautiful."

And she beamed, all white teeth and innocence.

"For a human," he made himself qualify, turning back to the TARDIS and his screwdriver. Now was not the time. There would never be a time. Not with her. And not for him, not anymore.

Luckily, she didn't take offense. It would have been a distraction tactic, sure, but he'd rather go happily out into the crisp dark night. She was too excited to linger.

He watched her step on snow as if the act itself was brand new, and he couldn't help but offer her his arm. She took it, and maybe one of these days, that would quit surprising him.
