[Legend of Korra] a wisp of smoke (Korra & Asami gen)
Title: a wisp of smoke
Fandom: Legend of Korra
Length: 544 words
Prompt: Katie - Korra and Asami, ANYTHING EXCEPT MAKO
Pairing: Korra and Asami gen
Other: Awkwardly, Korra approached the fire and carefully added another log from their pile. For a moment she had contemplated laying back down and pretending that she'd accidentally begun sleepwalking. But that wasn't right. She didn't have anything against Asami. Korra wasn't sure she could have beaten up her own dad, if it had come down to it. Asami was made of steel.
It was late, and Korra knew she should be asleep. Really asleep, not that half-listening groggy drifting that she'd been doing lately. If Amon or his gang showed up, she wouldn't be able to feel them coming, anyway. She'd have to trust Lin to do that. And she did, she really did. Lin might not like her much, but she was the most dependable person Korra had ever met.
Knowing she should sleep didn't really help the not-sleeping problem. She turned over half a dozen times and finally decided to get up. The fire was burning low, and it would be a cold night. She should probably stoke it up a bit.
When she sat up, there was a small gasp from the other side of the firepit. The light gleamed off Asami's electric glove, but the other girl relaxed when she saw who was moving around.
Korra had forgotten that it was Asami's turn for guard duty. She'd done hers at the beginning of the night. They were lucky to have enough people with them to be able to take short shifts and still get rest. Well, some rest. Bolin seemed like the only person who could sleep through the night. His snores cut the night like a saw. They were somehow reassuring.

"Thanks," Asami said quietly. "It was getting chilly, and I was afraid I'd put it out by accident if I added another log."
"Oh," Korra said, a little surprised. She'd known how to make fires, since, well, she could walk. But knowing how to build them to last was just as important when you lived in the South Pole. It could mean your life one day.
"I could show you," she said. Asami smiled.
"Shouldn't you be sleeping?" she said, without bite, and moved quietly around to Korra's side of the flames. By the time they were done, a yawn was threatening to overwhelm Korra. Asami's uncalloused hands were dusted with ash, and she had a smudge on one cheek.
"You've got something," Korra said, gesturing. They'd been talking in low murmurs, heads close together. It had felt nice, like being little girls on a sleepover, whispering secrets.
Asami laughed quietly. She reached up and brushed her face off onto her sleeve casually.
"Camping is dirty business," Korra said, brushing dust off her pant leg.
"Life is dirty business," Asami said. "I bet you can get another hour of sleep before Tenzin gets up and starts doing that meditation thing of his."
Korra yawned again and got up, stretching. Now she felt tired enough to rest.
"I hope so," she said, and before she turned away, she pushed her foot in the dirt a little and said, "Thanks."
Asami smiled. "Go on, then. I'll keep the watch."
Korra nodded, and went to curl up in her bedroll. This time it was easy to drift off and sleep.
