[Tangled] never love without giving (Eugene/Rapunzel)
Title: never love without giving
Fandom: Tangled
Length: 491 words
Prompt: Christmas card fic!
Pairing: Eugene/Rapunzel
Other: n/a
Excerpt: "--Don't know, Maximus," the person was saying. Eugene, it was Eugene! She crept closer. "I mean, what could I possibly give her that she doesn't have already?"
Rapunzel was sure this was going to be the very best Christmas ever. She'd loved Christmas when she lived in the tower, and it had just been her and Gothel and Pascal then. She'd decorated every inch of the tower (nearly literally) and spent the better part of a month making presents.
And now she had tons of people to make gifts for! Her parents, Eugene, Maximus, still Pascal of course, the nice folks at the Ugly Duckling... As soon as it became December, she began work. Scarves, paintings, whatever she could think of. She helped the staff put up the decorations everywhere, even on the ramparts. (It made her miss her longer hair a little; it made a great rope.)
She was a little disappointed that Eugene didn't seem to share her enthusiasm. The closer it got to the holiday, the less she saw of him. He'd taken to hiding in lesser-used parts of the castle, or the stables. It made Rapunzel sad. The best part of the holiday season was spending time with the people she cared for, and it seemed like Eugene didn't feel like that at all.
She went out to the stables one day to show Maximus the progress she'd made on the saddle she was knitting him, but she paused at the door when she heard someone talking.
"--Don't know, Maximus," the person was saying. Eugene, it was Eugene! She crept closer. "I mean, what could I possibly give her that she doesn't have already?"
The horse snorted. "Yeah, everyone always says that it's the thought that counts, but you can't unwrap thoughts on Christmas, okay. I'm desperate here! Every time I look at her I feel guiltier. She probably made me something completely amazing. I can't even steal her something because she'd look all disappointed at me. Plus, I promised not to do that anymore."
Rapunzel couldn't stand to listen in anymore. She burst into the stable and wrapped her arms around Eugene. He looked confused.
"You don't need to get me a present," she said. Maximus snorted again, but they both ignored him. "Really, I promise. You are the best present."
"I could put a bow on my head if you'd like," he offered, along with his charismatic grin. He ruffled her hair. She kissed his cheek.
"I still feel like I should get you a gift, you know," he said.
"The important part of Christmas is being with the people you love," she said firmly, taking his hand. "So quit hiding. I'm going skating later with Mom and Dad. You should come too."
Eugene snorted. "Have you ever seen me on skates?"
She laughed and poked him and they went back up to the castle, hand in hand. Maximus shook his head. Humans always made things too complicated.
At least Rapunzel had sorted it out.
