[Avatar] looking for an accomplice (Toph/Teo)
Title: looking for an accomplice
Fandom: Avatar
Length: 520 words
Prompt: Christmas card fic!
Pairing: Toph/Teo
Other: n/a
Excerpt: But Teo has a quiet humor that she seems to appreciate, in her own loud way, and nothing she says ever bothers him. It is he that she talks to, the day that the Fire Prince storms off.
Toph pauses to tweak Teo's cap when she walks by him on her way to Aang's earthbending lesson, and Teo wonders a moment when she became so comfortable with him. At first, it had seemed that they could never be friends: not because they'd offended one another but because they simply had such different outlooks on life. Teo is forever in the sky, bright-minded and soaring, and Toph is grounded, rooted to the earth and practical. They have a hard time understanding this about each other at first.
But Teo has a quiet humor that she seems to appreciate, in her own loud way, and nothing she says ever bothers him. It is he that she talks to, the day that the Fire Prince storms off. He'd been exploring with the others and returned to the sort of angry atmosphere that meant he'd missed a fight. Rather than get into the middle of a group that closely bonded, he'd rolled off to find something else to do. Instead he found Toph, who was perhaps a bit meanly redecorating a pillar in one of the rooms not far off the main hallway. She's etching a winged pig into it with her fingertip, and Teo wants to ask where she got that strange idea, but instead he asks, "What's going on?"
Toph shakes her head like a damp puppybadger, scowling. "They're all being stubborn over something stupid. Yeah, he's not the nicest guy, but Zuko is the only hope we have right now for a firebending teacher. And he meant what he said, but no one would believe me."
That is quite an outburst and Teo has to consider it for a few moments before he answers, cautiously. "I'm sure they'll come around. You have good judgment; they all know that."
Toph grins a little. She roots around in her ear for a moment and says, "You think? Katara thinks I'm pretty irresponsible."
"But you've never let Aang down," he points out. That's the most important thing.
This time her smile is full, genuine. "Right. And I won't. I'll just have to talk to Zuko myself. Thanks, Wheels."
He's not entirely sure if talking to Zuko is the right decision to make (he would have bet on talking to Aang, himself), but Toph can take care of herself, so he's not too worried.
He does feel a bit guilty when she comes back, though, feet burned and frustrated, but she doesn't blame him, and tells him so in no uncertain terms. She'd take him up on his offer of a ride if she wasn't planning on making Zuko carry her everywhere (served him right, she says).
From that point on, they're friends. And he thinks that might be the point at which he started falling in love with her, just a little bit. He's going to tell her pretty soon. He's just got to figure out how to talk her into going flying, first.
