[xxxHOLiC] I wish I knew how to break the spell (Clow/Yuuko)
Title: I wish I knew how to break the spell
Fandom: xxxHOLiC
Length: 527 words
Prompt: Christmas card fic!
Pairing: Clow/Yuuko
Other: n/a
Excerpt: But someone was ringing the doorbell, and Yuuko's curiosity overwhelmed her laziness. She got up and went to the window to see who was standing on her step.
Someone was ringing the doorbell. It was eleven p.m. on the twenty-fourth of December, and it had been snowing since dawn. Yuuko hadn't bothered to dress today. She'd taken a long hot bath and slipped into her dressing gown, and now she was drinking mulled wine and contemplating going to bed early. But someone was ringing the doorbell, and Yuuko's curiosity overwhelmed her laziness. She got up and went to the window to see who was standing on her step.
It was Clow Reed. She recognized him immediately, even though she hadn't seen him in perhaps five years or so. Those broad shoulders, that tall form, those glimmering glass spectacles. It could be no other. The last Yuuko had heard, Clow had gone to England in search of some esoterica. That made his appearance on her doorstep even more astounding.
After a moment's lengthy consideration, Yuuko opened the door. In all likelihood, he would have come in anyway, but he liked to pretend to be polite.
Clow looked up and down and a slow grin spilled across his face. "Lovely as ever, Yuuko," he declared familiarly. There were unmelted snowflakes in his long fall of dark hair. She grabbed the lapel of his heavy coat and dragged him indoors without ceremony, slamming the door behind him against the cold.
"It's nice to see you too," he said, his voice a pleased rumble. She pushed him away firmly and stalked back to her divan, not looking to see if he was following.
"I should have left you on the porch," she said, because she could hear his measured step behind hers. "It's Christmas."
"All the more reason to let me in," he said, standing in the doorway to the sitting room as she spread herself out on the couch and took a long drag from her pipe. "Holiday generosity, they call it."
Yuuko rolled her eyes. "I don't give anything for free. As you know."
"It's a good thing I'm not empty-handed, then," he said. Theatrically he took off his gloves, one after the other, and he rolled up his sleeves. She rolled her eyes again, but this time with the smallest smile. There were presents involved, after all.
Clow started pulling things from the pockets of his greatcoat and from the air in the manner of a stage magician, which he sometimes pretended to be. Several bottles of wine, various pieces of jewelry, scarves, and trinkets -- when he finished, she almost wondered if he'd spent his time abroad only on purchasing presents for her. (Not that she would have minded.)
"Have a earned my right to stay yet, hmm?" he asked. She crooked her finger at him, and when he leaned in, she grabbed the scarf around his neck and pulled. Eventually it slid to the floor with a thump, and their lips met briefly.
"Since you brought the wine," she said.
"Merry Christmas, Yuuko," he said, uncorking a bottle, and the snow continued to fall outside, unnoticed. Eventually it filled in his footsteps, but long before then they'd gone to bed.
