[Star Wars] we were children once again (Luke & Leia gen)
Title: we were children once again
Fandom: Star Wars
Length: 498 words
Prompt: Christmas card fic!
Pairing: Luke & Leia gen
Other: Set sometime between IV and V.
Excerpt: Right now she was trying to teach him how to play a card game from Alderaan. Well, trying was what she'd say, but the fact of the matter was that he was very good at it and had already beaten her twice.
The same reasons that made Hoth a good rebel base made Hoth a very unpleasant place to live, even temporarily. Leia understood this and knew there'd be no point to complaining, even if it would make her feel better. She'd agreed with the rest to come here, and it was a great base for operations. She just wished it was slightly less miserable. Sometimes she'd thought she'd never remember what it felt like to be warm, to be too warm.
She was amazed by how well Luke took it. They were probably about the same age but sometimes he seemed so much younger than her, probably because of his relative lack of life experience. He'd gone from being on a scorching desert planet to being here, and seemed to barely notice the difference. He was dedicated to the cause, and as helpful as he could be. Leia really liked that about him. He had this determined innocence and sweetness that meant that she quite often gravitated toward him during their occasional downtime. Even rebels had to rest sometimes.
Right now she was trying to teach him how to play a card game from Alderaan. Well, trying was what she'd say, but the fact of the matter was that he was very good at it and had already beaten her twice. In fact, she was beginning to think that he was trying to let her win this time, and that would be sweet if it wasn't misguided and frustrating. She played one of her trump cards and grinned at him. She'd just have to teach him that she wasn't someone he could condescend to like that.
"Might have gotten me there," Luke said cheerfully.
"Oh, play your hand," Leia answered, challenging.
"Well, if I must," he said, faking reluctance, and then put down the three cards that won him the game. Leia leaned back in her seat and laughed.
"And here I thought you were going to let me win," she said to his questioning look.
"Let you win? I think you'd skewer me if I did something like that," he said with a teasing smile. "Condescending to the princess is a fate punishable by death, right?"
She nodded firmly but couldn't help but giggle again. She handed him the deck and the rest of the cards in her hand, since it was his turn to shuffle.
Four games later, she was yawning and ready for bed. It wasn't until she had gave him her goodbyes (a brief kiss on the cheek) and had gone to her quarters that she realized that she was actually comfortable. For once she didn't feel too cold, too much like she was missing something important. She liked that feeling. It was nice to have friends again, and a little while to relax between fighting. It was nice to have Luke around.
She went off to bed happily, and slept well.
