Excerpt: "It's Christmas. Not that that means much to me, really, since I'm Jewish, or to you, because you're an atheist, but I'm pretty sure you're entitled to dinner anyway." Rachel smiled hopefully.

It was a strange set of circumstances that left Rachel and Kurt to have their first Christmas in New York alone together. Perhaps not entirely strange, but an unfortunate meeting of various problems. Burt would have been perfectly happy to buy Kurt's ticket home, for example, just as he bought Finn's. But Kurt was working all hours on a difficult project and didn't think he could get away from it, especially when he was told he couldn't bring loose rhinestones on the plane.

It was perfectly understandable that Blaine was going home too. The apartment had been uncomfortable ever since he and Kurt had broken up in November. He'd finish moving in with another friend when he came back in January, and maybe he and Kurt could think about being friends again then.

As for Rachel, her dads had planned to visit them for a few days. She'd been planning the tourist schedule for a month when one of her dads managed to break a leg two days before they were supposed to step on the plane. It had been too late then for Rachel to book her own flight.

The apartment was too small for four people, but with only two it felt impossibly empty to Kurt. He was actually glad when Rachel knocked at the door to their bedroom and interrupted him.

(Yes, their bedroom -- Blaine had elected to sleep on the couch for a couple of days after that last fight, but the metal frame was too uncomfortable to do it regularly. Finn didn't like sharing with Blaine, but he liked the idea of Rachel doing it even less. So Rachel and Kurt had been roommates for the past month and hadn't even tried to kill each other yet. They probably could have switched back when Finn and Blaine left, but neither of them had even suggested it, for some reason.)

"It's Christmas. Not that that means much to me, really, since I'm Jewish, or to you, because you're an atheist, but I'm pretty sure you're entitled to dinner anyway." Rachel smiled hopefully.

"Just let me grab a hat," Kurt said.

Half an hour later, they were sitting on the living room floor, couch neglected. Rachel put on Celine Dion's Christmas album and wrapped tinsel around Kurt's neck. They were giggling over something the super had said last week, and Kurt was attempting to feed her some of his beef and broccoli (just the broccoli part; he wasn't heartless). Maybe they were a little drunk, because Puck had sent them some wine for Hanukkah and they had forgotten to open it until now. But that was probably no excuse for the sudden way their eyes met, before they both leaned forward. Their lips met, and Rachel bit Kurt a little. He found himself opening his mouth to kiss her more firmly.

He was almost afraid to stop kissing her -- afraid of the way she'd look at him then. But when he did, she looked as bemused as he did.

"Mistletoe," Rachel said hurriedly. Her face was flushed. Kurt nodded quickly. After a moment's awkwardness, the conversation moved on.

He may have made a mental note to actually buy mistletoe, though.
