It starts with one rock. It doesn't look like much on the outside, just a dull grey, but Toph cracks it open to show Charlie the crystal inside. And then she puts it on the bookshelf.
A week later, another joins it, small and lumpy with a small fossil in the center. Two days later, a third. A month in, and it might be said that the bookshelf holds more rocks than books. Charlie makes the mistake of brushing it by accident and ends up with several falling on her foot. The angry curse word she shouts brings Toph to see what is going on.
"Hey, don't break it!" Toph says unwisely, picking up the rock. "You should be more careful, Char."
"Why is the bookshelf full of rocks, anyway? This was not what I agreed to when I said you could move in," Charlie said. Her foot was throbbing. There was totally going to be a bruise later. A big one.
"I thought you liked them," Toph protested. "You never said anything before!"
"I didn't think they'd stay! What are you collecting rocks for, anyway? There are rocks all over! You live for rocks!"
Toph scowled, her face reddening. "I thought you liked them! I brought them for you. They're pretty! I'll go throw them away, geez!"
She scooped up a rock, squeezing it like a stress ball. Charlie heard the crunch of the rock moving and winced. She hobbled over to the couch and sat down.
"I'm sorry," she said. "I -- I do like them. Really."
Toph didn't turn. Although she sometimes accommodated people who liked to talk face to face, she fiddled with her rocks instead.
"I can put them in my room," Toph said, although she sounded a little uncertain.
"Leave them," Charlie said. "It's about time we got some real decoration in here!"
"You think?"
Toph replaced the rock on the shelf. It had fingerprints in it now, and looked even more interesting. She casually sauntered over and sat down next to Charlie.
"I'll rearrange them so they won't fall off," she said. This was as close to an apology as she'd ever get. Charlie smiled.
"You could rub my feet in the meantime," she said, and Toph laughed.
"If you insist, Princess," she said, and grabbed Charlie's foot, pulling it into her lap. Charlie leaned back and shut her eyes.
The rocks were definitely staying.
