He asked her if she wanted it, in the end. She looked at the chair with such venom in her eyes that he immediately regretted the question.

"Why would I want that horrible thing?" Yuuko asked.

Clow shook his head. "I can't imagine, dear," he said, in that one placating tone that he know she disliked. He couldn't help it, nowadays. It seemed to be the way his voice spilled into the world. Yue and Cerberus had picked up on it, as well, and were padding around the mansion with soft footsteps and quiet voices, like someone had died.

They thought he was sick. Soon he would be sick of sand.

"You are the only one who ever liked it. I've been trying to convince you to get rid of it for years," Yuuko continued. Her voice was loud and sharp and aching.

"Decades, perhaps," he answered, trying to be light-hearted. He remembered the weight of her in his lap, in that selfsame chair; hours spent idle in this room, with a book on the arm of the chair, just for show; she hated not being the center of attention. He remembered her head pressed into his shoulder. He remembered how much bigger the chair seemed when he was alone.

"Maybe I'll keep it a while longer," he said. "But I'm sure you'll want a few things from the wine cellar. I won't be drinking half as much, next life. Things to do."

"Booze!" Yuuko said cheerfully. "Now you're talking."

She left the room and the chair without a glance behind her. He wasn't quite as strong.
