Length: 312 words
Prompt: fic_promptly: Avatar: The Last Airbender, always-a-boy!Azula & Zuko, first son & second son

No one even pretended otherwise: Azulon II should have been Ozai's first son. By the time that Zuko was ten and learning basic katas, Azulon was already doing advanced work. Iroh came back from the war a sad, distracted man, but he couldn't help but see the signs. Iroh had survived being the older son due to tragedy; Ozai would inherit the throne due to his weakness. He doubted that Zuko's fate would be even half as pleasant. The boy was proud of who he was. He had the makings of a great Firelord -- not a great dictator, but a great leader. But Ozai saw none of this, and neither did Azulon, and Iroh knew that Zuko's days were numbered. Accidents were all too easy to arrange.
Ursa was not stupid; she knew what was coming. She asked his help, and a couple of months later, Ursa, Iroh, and Zuko were kidnapped by a seditious organization called the White Lotus. At least, that's what the Firelord was told. His rescue efforts were lackluster and quickly faded.
In Ba Sing Se, an old man, his daughter, and his grandson opened up a teashop. The boy was sullen and golden-eyed, and no one in the family ever mentioned the child's father. Most other refugees assumed the worst quietly. (And yet, they never came close to the truth.)
The day after the Avatar arrived in the city, Zuko was gone with them. Neither of his relatives were surprised at his disappearance. They knew he'd go back. He would be a great Firelord, in the end -- not because of birthright, but because he understood responsibility.
In an Earth Kingdom city where there was no war, a woman swept the steps and an old man made tea. They waited, and hoped.
