[Animorphs] a slightly sour sweet (Ax & ensemble gen)
Title: a slightly sour sweet
Fandom: Animorphs
Length: 613 words
Prompt: fic_promptly: Animorphs, Ax + any, trick or treating
Pairing: Ax & ensemble gen
Other: n/a
Excerpt: "Prince Jake," Ax said, as they were tramping along the sidewalk to the next house, "why does this ghost costume have no mouth? Moooouth. Mmmmmouth. From what I have studied in your books, ghosts like to talk, and talking needs mouths for your people. Peeeeople."
They were really too old for trick-or-treating now, but they couldn't say that to Ax. He was too excited once Tobias explained it to him. Cassie was a little worried that he'd end up with a candy that was poisoned or had razor blades in it, because he hardly let the owner of the house close the door before he was eating his spoils (at least they'd convinced him to take off the wrappers first).
No one really felt like trick-or-treating this year, if they were being honest. It seemed pretty ridiculous to deal with such mundane things in the middle of fighting the war. Even though they were laughing and joking, they were still enough on edge, listening too closely to rustles in the bushes. They'd had a debate in Cassie's barn before they went out together, trying to decide if it would be safe to go out as a group. Even when offered a costume, Tobias had refused, just in case they knocked on a wrong door. They'd finally decided to take the risk. After all, it was dark and there were plenty of other groups of kids running around. They'd blend in.
Of course, it was hard to blend in with Ax. Marco had taken to going up to the doors with him and shrugging apologetically when people stared. Luckily, most people seemed to assume that a guy that age stuttering when he said trick-or-treat wasn't entirely of his right mind. Some of them gave Marco extra candy for 'taking such good care of his brother.'

"That was fiction, Ax," Jake answered, shaking his head. "And don't call me Prince."
"It's one of the things that make them scary," Cassie tried to explain. "They speak and move, but they aren't very human-like."
"I don't know, I think that this costume is pretty human-like. The sheet has a floral pattern on it," Marco offered cheerfully.
"It's the only old one that was in the closet!" Rachel said, scowling at him. "I don't know what you expected last minute."
"It is quite all right," Ax reassured. "Quiiiite. Quiiiiet. I am appreciating the kindness of these strangers. It is a shame this holiday only occurs once a year."
Something moved in the trees. Everyone froze, straining their eyes to see, holding a morph in their mind, just in case.
<Someone is going to save me a Snickers, right?> Tobias said. He glided into view and perched on a high branch, where he preened a little. <You can't let Ax eat all of that stuff. I have to live with him afterwards.>
"Glad you came," Cassie whispered, and by unspoken agreement they all started walking again, to seem less suspicious. Tobias stayed where he was. Red-tails didn't really fly at night. Even the smallest things were a risk nowadays. Still, Marco turned back toward the tree and tossed a small candy toward Tobias, who snapped it out of the air.
"Don't eat the paper. Aper," Ax cautioned helpfully.
<No problem,> Tobias answered, sounding amused. Jake glared at Marco.
"What happened to being normal kids out trick-or-treating, huh?"
Marco shrugged. "This is as normal as we get, Fearless Leader. Now, come on, I bet I can get the next lady to give me an extra candy bar."
Rachel rolled her eyes. A group of small children ran by, shrieking, and nothing attacked them.
All in all, it was a pretty good night.
