[Avatar] a long conversation (Toph/Iroh)
Title: a long conversation
Fandom: Avatar
Length: 341 words
Prompt: Given a pairing, I will write their wedding: Toph/Iroh
Pairing: Toph/Iroh established
Other: Toph is obviously of age here.
Excerpt: So the bride goes barefoot and doesn't wear a dress, and Aang volunteers to officiate, which means that Iroh spends most of the ceremony hiding a smile, because Aang has a sweet but silly way of phrasing things.
They make a conscious choice to ignore the wedding traditions of both cultures. Iroh has no desire for all of the pomp and circumstance that came with his first marriage, and Toph simply refuses. She will do this on her terms, or not at all, and he has no problem indulging this. It seems reasonable.
So the bride goes barefoot and doesn't wear a dress, and Aang volunteers to officiate, which means that Iroh spends most of the ceremony hiding a smile, because Aang has a sweet but silly way of phrasing things, and he personalizes the vows for the two of them, and accepts Toph's called-out alterations (Iroh can only rub her feet if she asks first, and if he asks her to cook, he'd better be prepared to suffer).
They only have a few witnesses, one of whom (his nephew) spends the whole time in a bewildered type of sulk, occasionally mouthing, "Really?" at Sokka, who attempts to explain by sign language and a shrug that "love is love." At least, that's what Iroh thinks Sokka means. The boy would not win a game of charades.
Finally, it is done, and they slip rings onto each other's hands at the same time, because this is not like Earth Kingdom custom, where the woman is given to the man, and this is not like Fire Nation custom, where the man has begged for the privilege of her hand. This is just the two of them, and they have always had equal footing in this relationship.
Katara is sniffling and Zuko is muttering under his breath. Aang gives them both a strong hug and Sokka claps Iroh on the back in congratulations. Toph grins and leans over and kisses Iroh on the cheek; she shot up in height a few years ago, but is still only an inch taller than he.
"All right, now we can party!" she says, sounding quite enthusiastic about the idea, and his new bride is making a beeline for the wine.
Iroh follows. It's going to be a great party.
