[Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle] nothing keeps (Touya, Yukito, Sakura gen)
Title: nothing keeps
Fandom: Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle
Length: 561 words
Prompt: fic_promptly: Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, any, any
Pairing: slight Touya/Yukito; mentioned Syaoran/Sakura; mostly Touya, Yukito, and Sakura gen.
Other: Spoilers for end of series.
Excerpt: It was like his sister had gone away and become a new person.
It was like his sister had gone away and become a new person. Touya knew that Yukito had sent her away with only the best of intentions. Sakura was, after all, his sister too, in all but name. But she had not came back as the same girl. She was quiet now, with a certain cold strength to her that had not been there before. Her spine was straight with devotion, and she hesitated before she spoke, as if weighing out her words for worthiness.
Touya thought at first that it was simple depression: whether he liked it or not, Sakura was very much in love with that irritating boy, and from what Touya understood, it would be a long time before he came back. He knew that he didn't have the full story. Even when he'd asked the fighter in black and the mage in white, they'd be glanced at each other before answering, and Touya knew they'd edited their stories.
He wasn't sure he liked these strangers. Not just Syaoran, who was just as changed as Sakura was, but the easy way that the magician grinned, calling himself the mother of their family, as if Sakura didn't already have a family. The dark man had dark eyes as well, eyes that had seen battle, and although his hand was soft on Sakura's back, gentleness seemed new to him.
"They took the best care of her that they could," Yukito told him, the evening of the day that the group had disappeared, leaving Sakura waving at thin air. She'd stood out there watching nothing for so long that Touya almost came out after her, but Yukito's hand had been on his elbow, and instead they just watched, waited for her to bow her head a little and come inside.
"But why did they have to?" Touya asked, running a hand through his hair and ruffling it up. "She's just a little girl. She didn't do anything to deserve... having to cross a dozen worlds and face monsters."
"Sometimes the sand is hotter than it should be," Yukito said, although his face was just as troubled.
Perhaps the worst thing was that she still tried for Touya. She protested it when he teased her and went down among the townspeople when she could. She still smiled, but it wasn't the same smile. It drove him crazy slowly.
"We went to a world," she told him over breakfast one morning, "where another you and another Yukito-san worked in a restaurant. Syaoran called you the king and you thought he was crazy."
Touya wanted to shiver. Instead, he said, "I bet you were still a monster there."
She scowled theatrically. "We didn't meet the other me," she declared. "Not there." And then her expression settled into seriousness, and she returned to her meal.
He caught up with her outside Yukito's room. She'd resumed her training for priesthood, and spent most afternoons there, while Touya managed the day-to-day affairs that didn't need religious consultation. She looked up at him, surprised, and instead of the words he wanted to say, he just pulled her close for a moment, and hugged her.
"Don't give Yuki too much trouble," he said, letting go and smiling down at her. Her eyes glittered wetly, but she nodded.
She might not be the same anymore, but he was really glad to have her back, anyway.
