[Young Wizards] wider than the sky (Kit/Nita)

Length: 481 words
Prompt: fic_promptly: Author's Choice, Author's Choice, "Telepathy isn't like a phone call or a letter."

Telepathy isn't like a phone call or a letter. There's an intimacy to it that can save a life in a tough space, but it also has potential to be annoying.
I can almost taste your dinner, Nita thinks back to Kit, nose wrinkling. She's sitting in the window, reading and waiting for the spaghetti pot to boil. Is this important?
It's a good dinner, Kit answers, unflappable, and swallows. Nita swallows too, reflexively, and then she rolls her eyes.
I heard that, he points out. She leans back and shuts her eyes, trying to step back out of his mind enough to avoid the weird sensation of eating something when you aren't.
So you were saying? she asks, curiosity winning.
Oh, right, he says, almost as if he's forgotten, and hesitates long enough that she sends him a touch of frustration. He laughs in her mind.
So I was thinking about the way that claudation bent, right? And...
He pictures the spell diagrams clearly, so that she can read them too, and while Kit eats they go over it in their mindspace. There was a time last year when this would have been impossible between them, when they'd stopped hearing each other except in desperate situations, and even now, they'd rather talk in person mostly; it allows a little more privacy. Every time they kiss, their bodies talk to each other. Mind connection is even more intimate.
Isn't someone going to notice you're not paying attention to dinner? Nita asks, a late realization.
Nah, Kit answers. Mama keeps saying I have my head in the clouds lately. Carmela won't quit teasing.
Nita finds herself blushing a little. Their romantic relationship is new and sometimes she's not sure how to react to the way that other people see it. Kit has always been more than her best friend, ever since they finished their Ordeals together. Dating adds a new and unfamiliar dimension, although it seems to be working out.
Let's look at this again after I have my dinner, she says finally. The changes seem sound. We can show it to Tom and Carl, see what they think.
Okay, he says. I'll bring you some pie. Love ya, Neets.
The words are surrounded by a wave of affection that warms her down to her toes. It's almost overwhelming, the strength of his care for her. She can only hope that he feels the same strong emotion when she answers back.
Love you too, Kit. See you soon, she says, leaning back and smiling a little, and she's humming when she gets up to check dinner.
