Quinn abandoned Mercedes after she had the baby.

It wasn't that there was anything wrong with Mercedes -- in fact, for a few short months sophomore year, they had been utterly inseparable -- but something deeper than that. Quinn had abandoned Mercedes to crawl back to the top. She hadn't even done it on purpose, so coldly; it was just that for a while, every time she looked at Mercedes, Quinn remembered clutching her hand in that hospital room while everything was falling to pieces, and she couldn't stand remembering that vulnerability. It wasn't Mercedes's fault at all. It was Quinn's insecurities.

But it wasn't like she'd recognized it so baldly back then, or like she knew how to explain it. All she knew was that the closer she slipped back to old Quinn, the less she took Mercedes's calls. Eventually Mercedes got the hint.

She had goals. She had needs. She had Finn and she had her campaign for prom queen, and it wasn't until she slapped Rachel's cheek that she realized how far she'd fallen from the good person she'd once believed herself to be. She hadn't been a good person then, captain of the Cheerios Quinn. But she had been trying so hard when she was pregnant, like baby weight had turned her into some kind of Buddha (not meant as blasphemy, of course), and she had really begun to feel some kind of peace except for the whole needing to pee every ten minutes.

But that was gone, and it was entirely her fault. She'd gone off the rails, even if Rachel took it in stride -- perhaps because Rachel took it in stride, expected this kind of conduct from her. Quinn really didn't want to be that girl. She hated herself, in that moment. She was tired of being perfect, because she was so darn bad at it.

And there Mercedes had been, when Quinn needed her most. With Finn gone, she had no ride, but Mercedes had invited her into her car without a thought. She was silent as Sam and Rachel and Mercedes threw themselves into bright cheer over the dance, critiquing each other's performances and dancing around the elephant in the SUV. They didn't talk about Kurt, and they didn't talk about Quinn, and Quinn just mumbled, "Thank you," when she got out of the car.

She wished she'd taken the time to tell Mercedes she was beautiful, but the car was already driving away.
