Sandry swallowed instead of crying. She should have expected it -- none of her friendships with other nobleborn children ever lasted long. As soon as their parents learned that she played with their children alongside the servants' children or local ones as well, they found other things for their precious babes to do. She'd thought that maybe Kara would be different. She had admitted, shyly, that she was also fond of weaving, and offered to show Sandry some of the small things she'd made. But when Sandry arrived at her door the next morning, sewing bag at her side, she was told that Kara was having lessons all day and wouldn't be available. Probably not for the remainder of Sandry's stay here, actually.

So Sandry had bowed and thanked the woman politely before sneaking off to a quiet spot of her own to indulge a bit of sadness. She'd cry a little and then she'd feel better. Maybe by then Mariya would be done with the morning's chores and could talk a little.

She wasn't sure why it mattered so much to anyone if she talked to everyone with the same cheerful deference. She wasn't being rude, after all. She simply treated everyone just like she wanted to be treated herself. The world would be a much better place if everyone followed that philosophy, in her opinion.

Wiping her face of the tears that were her reaction to such injustice, Sandry went back to her room and put her sewing away. Mariya was fun to play with but she did no more than was necessary to fix loose buttons. She'd have to wait until they moved on to see if there was anyone who would be able to help her with the pattern she wanted to make.

Heart a little lighter, she clattered down the stairs, letting herself smile again.
