"Hello? Do you remember what happened the last time I fell in water? I am not going in there again," Toph declared, turning toward the waves breaking on the shore and scowling as if they could register their displeasure. She crossed her arms, her body stiff with distaste for the idea.

"Look, I'll get Sokka to throw you in if I have to," Suki said, voice patient (Toph snorted at the idea, which so wasn't happening). "If you're going to visit an island or the poles or... whenever, they have water there. You might fall in again, and it will be really helpful if you can even just tread water for a little while."

Toph's shoulders hunched. "I can't see out there!" she protested. "If you teach me to swim, I'll probably swim in the wrong direction and make it worse."

"That's still better than swallowing water and screaming," Suki said, maddeningly serene. "Come on, you can do this. Have I found the one thing the big bad earthbender is scared of?"

Reluctantly, Toph stripped off her shirt and loose pants. If there was one thing guaranteed to get her moving, it was an accusation of cowardice. She took a few reluctant steps forward, feeling the waves begin to lap around her feet with something that did resemble trepidation.

Suki rested a hand on Toph's shoulder. "I can save you again if I have to," she said quietly. "I'm not even in full Kyoshi dress this time, you know."

Toph sucked in her breath and took another step forward, letting the water swallow her feet, and she thought about all the things she hadn't been allowed to do that she was really good at. Then she took a deep breath and plunged forward.

Aww, this is sweet. Water is definitely Toph's weakness, but Suki's got a point, and I like the way you handled it. And Suki's "I can save you again if I have to" is really darn cute.

I think they could be good friends in the end, especially once Toph gets over her little thing for Sokka.
